Sebastian's expression soured instantly.
He knew exactly who was really pulling the strings behind this phone call.
The assistant wouldn't dare pull a stunt like this on her own.
Janetta had undeniably ordered her to do it.
She was using a third party to manipulate him into rushing to her side.
It was a passive-aggressive power play to guilt-trip him.
Janetta had been growing increasingly bold lately. She always knew just how far she could push the boundaries before backing off and playing the innocent victim.
"Since when do you have the authority to issue me demands?" he asked the assistant in an icy tone.
The assistant practically dissolved in terror. "I wouldn't dare! Mr. Hayes, you misunderstood..."
He should have hung up right then and there.
But given her condition, he relented and gave a final set of instructions.
"Take care of her. And make sure she stays out of trouble, or I'll have your job," he warned before ending the call.
In the end, he couldn't be entirely ruthless with Janetta.
After all, he had pampered and protected her for the last ten years.
He couldn't find it in himself to unleash his full fury on her.
He figured once this current mess was settled, he would find a way to make it up to her.
However, he wasn't going to let her manipulative little stunt slide. She needed to learn a lesson about knowing her place.
So he wasn't going to visit her tonight.
Sliding his phone back into his pocket, he pushed the door open and stepped into the hospital room.
Helena was still deeply sedated.
One of the maids from the estate looked up nervously. "Mr. Hayes, she keeps mumbling in her sleep."
Sebastian walked over to the edge of the bed.
Helena was deathly pale, tossing fitfully against the sheets.
Her hands were curled into tight, rigid fists.
She looked unbearably helpless, lost, and pitiful.
She looked like someone drowning in the ocean without a single piece of driftwood in sight.
Seeing her awake, he quickly laid out a spread of light pastries and food.
Her stomach rolled at the sight of the food, but she didn't want to get the household staff in trouble again.
Sebastian's previous threat of firing the butler simply to terrorize her was still burned into her memory.
So, suppressing her nausea, she forced herself to swallow the pastries on her tray.
Thankfully, having passed the twelve-week mark, her morning sickness had largely subsided.
Once she had eaten most of the food, the butler didn't push her further and quietly cleared the table.
The room sank back into a prolonged silence.
Glancing toward the entrance, Helena suddenly realized that Sebastian's bodyguards were gone.
The butler had vanished as well.
Was she entirely alone?
Recognizing the opportunity, she scrambled out of bed and darted into the hallway.
She needed to find Wynn and make sure he was alright.
She knew exactly where he was being kept; having visited his floor before, she had memorized the route to his ICU ward.
