Sebastian kept his somber, heavy gaze fixed on her profile. Helena stayed quiet, her fingers still digging into the edge of her seat, tension radiating from her every pore. She couldn't predict what he was going to do. She had already braced herself for the worst—a furious outburst. After all, she was used to his temper. Catching her own reflection in the side mirror, she saw nothing but bitter mockery in her eyes. But surprisingly, Sebastian remained silent.
"Ah!" A gasp tore from her throat.
All the blood drained from her face as she instinctively grabbed the overhead handle, her other hand flying to protect her bump. If she hadn't been strapped in, she would have been thrown into the dashboard. Sebastian had stomped on the gas, accelerating violently. It was completely unprompted, giving her zero time to react.
Helena knew he was doing it on purpose. He loathed defiance. This was his petty, twisted way of punishing her. His silence never meant agreement; it just meant he was saving his ruthless cruelty to express his displeasure physically. Even so, Helena refused to beg. She maintained her rigid posture, staring silently out the window while swallowing down the nausea churning in her stomach.
Sebastian drove with a stone-cold expression, never once letting up on the speed. An indescribable irritation gnawed at his insides, infuriating him to his absolute limits. Yes, parading his affection for Helena in public was a calculated move to trigger Janetta. But sometimes, habits ingrained themselves. Regardless of the setting, he found himself reacting to Helena in the same protective, possessive ways. Lately, even he couldn't tell where the performance ended and reality began.
Yet, the moment Helena so callously tore down that veil, the one left looking like a fool was him, not her. Beau Sterling's probing questions echoed in his mind, suggesting that Helena held an irreplaceable spot in his heart.
Hah. She was a tool. What kind of status did a tool deserve?
Fueled by that cynical thought, he pressed his foot harder onto the accelerator.
