Still, she had come here with Sebastian. Basic courtesy dictated she at least let him know she was leaving. She refused to give him another excuse to torment her. Slipping out of the lounge, she retraced her steps toward the examination room.
A nagging curiosity tugged at her—it was just a reopened wound, so why was it taking him so long? As she rounded a quiet corner, the hushed whispers of two nurses caught her attention.
"Mr. Hayes is insanely reckless. He didn't even come back to get it sterilized properly. The doctor said the infection could literally rot down to the bone."
"I heard he's doing it for his wife. The Hayes family has been a total warzone lately, and he's had multiple close calls. But every time, he just gets patched up and rushes out. Because his wife is pregnant at home, and he can't bear the thought of worrying her."
"I eavesdropped on him saying that exact thing! He ordered them to keep his condition completely classified to protect her."
The gossiping made Helena frown, though she refused to read into it. The title "Mrs. Hayes" carried entirely different weights depending on the context. Helena knew better than anyone that the real Mrs. Hayes in Sebastian's heart was Janetta, not her. The secrecy was clearly an effort to keep his precious Janetta from panicking all the way in Boston. After all, she was pregnant too. Helena wasn't narcissistic enough to think he was suffering silently for her.
She waited in the shadows until the nurses disappeared down the hall before approaching the door. Just as her hand hovered over the knob, a familiar voice drifted from inside.
"Boss, are you really not going to tell her? At the very least, she needs to be on guard. You can't just let her wander around freely anymore. If you do..." It was Carter Miles, sounding deeply conflicted.
Sebastian cut him off sharply.
"No. Keep Helena entirely in the dark. She's pregnant, and she can't handle the stress. Put a full security detail on her around the clock. I will not tolerate a single mistake regarding her safety." Sebastian commanded.
