He Never Loved Me Until the Day I Finally Left Him novel Chapter 218

"Ah!" Helena cried out as she fell.

"Dammit!" Moving with explosive speed, Sebastian lunged forward and snatched her out of the air, pulling her tight against his chest.

"Keep your eyes shut," he commanded, his voice a low, lethal whisper in her ear.

Then, a muted thwip sliced through the air—the unmistakable sound of a silenced gunshot. It was followed by the frantic pounding of heavy boots as Sebastian's Bodyguards tore down the corridor in pursuit of the shooter.

A terrifying realization crashed over her: someone had just tried to assassinate her.

"Boss!" Carter Miles yelled, sprinting over.

"I'm fine. It's just a graze," Sebastian grunted, sounding entirely unfazed.

He didn't loosen his iron grip on her, his jaw locked in a furious scowl while keeping her face firmly pressed against his chest.

"Wait until it's clear," he ordered grimly.

Helena didn't dare open her eyes, but the sharp, coppery scent of fresh blood was already filling her nose. Something was very wrong.

About ten agonizing minutes passed before Sebastian finally let her go. Medical staff rushed forward in a flurry. It was only then that Helena realized his freshly bandaged back was saturated in blood again. He was immediately hauled back into the examination room.

Helena stood frozen in the hallway, completely numb. Carter stepped up beside her.

"Mrs. Hayes."

Her glazed eyes finally focused on him. "That shooter... they were aiming for me, weren't they?"

"I'm saying you aren't invisible to him. If it were solely about the heir, he wouldn't have thrown his own body in front of a bullet," Carter stated point-blank. "If you were mortally wounded, they would just perform an emergency C-section. Mr. Hayes has more than enough resources to keep a premature infant alive until the paperwork clears. But he chose to protect you instead."

A violent tremor rattled her heart. She curled her hands into tight fists, the veins protruding against her pale knuckles. She remained completely mute, sinking her teeth brutally into her bottom lip.

"He genuinely doesn't want you hurt," Carter continued, completely earnest. "You've been married for seven years. It's impossible for him to feel absolutely nothing for you. Every birthday, every holiday—I might have been the one physically handing you the boxes, but he personally selected every single gift. I was just the errand boy swiping the card."

"..."

"As for Janetta... it's true he harbors a lot of guilt toward her. And it's true she once saved his life." Carter paused, letting the heavy words hang in the air. Helena simply listened. A heavy sigh escaped Carter's lips. "It isn't my place to comment on their history. But I swear to you, since the day he put a ring on your finger, he has never been unfaithful. Janetta's pregnancy was a complete accident."

If Helena had looked numb before, her eyes now sparked with pure, unadulterated shock.
