Then again, everyone knew what Janetta was like.
She was a coward who couldn't handle a papercut.
There was no universe where she would be psychotic enough to stab herself in the stomach.
A millimeter in the wrong direction, and she would have bled out on the spot.
Most importantly, this baby was the ultimate leverage Janetta had to secure Beau. Without the child, her dream of marrying him would vanish completely.
Her position would become even more precarious.
Logically, there was no way Janetta would have driven that blade into her own stomach.
When you stacked all these impossibilities together, the whole situation turned completely absurd.
But Beau couldn't voice these suspicions aloud.
He was just a bystander.
And given the bloody circumstances, taking either woman's side was highly inappropriate.
So instead, he simply offered calmly, "Once you pull the security footage, you'll know exactly what happened. I noticed a surveillance camera down the hall, though the angle might be incomplete."
Sebastian gave a noncommittal hum, offering no further response.
The two men lapsed back into a heavy silence.
Eventually, the OR doors swung open.
Janetta was wheeled out, and the nurses transferred her directly to a VIP ward.
Sebastian immediately intercepted the surgeon.
"How is she?" he demanded, his voice tight.
The surgeon was blunt. "The majority of the trauma was absorbed by the fetus, which sustained a direct hit. The mother, however, miraculously avoided major organ damage. The laceration is severe, but with proper rest, she will recover."
Hearing that she was safe, the tense line of Sebastian's shoulders dropped a fraction.
But the doctor's next sentence brought the scowl right back.
"However, given the damage to her uterus, it's highly unlikely Ms. Ramirez will ever be able to conceive again," the doctor finished gravely.
Sebastian remained dead silent, letting the news wash over him.
Oddly enough, a bizarre, twisted sense of relief settled over him.
Whether it was because she would be spared the physical toll of another pregnancy, or for darker, unspoken reasons, he didn't know.
He just stood there like a statue.
