Her violent sobbing caused the fresh sutures on her stomach to stretch and bleed.
"Shh, you need to calm down. You're going to rip your stitches. Just focus on resting right now," Sebastian coaxed her gently.
Janetta acted as if she couldn't hear him, wailing into his chest.
But slowly, the frantic edge to her cries began to smooth out.
She looked up at him, her eyes brimming with fresh tears.
The entire room was a blurry, watery mess to her.
She played the part of a terrified, shattered mother to perfection.
Everything about her radiated pure, unadulterated heartbreak.
She began to apologize feverishly. "I'm so sorry, Seb. It's all my fault. I didn't protect him. I failed our son."
She fired off one tearful confession after another.
It was an Oscar-worthy performance, entirely devoid of a single flaw.
She didn't give him a chance to speak, expertly painting herself as weak, pathetic, and utterly helpless.
"It's my fault. I shouldn't have approached your wife. I shouldn't have provoked her," Janetta sobbed.
Sebastian's brow furrowed tightly.
His lips parted to interject.
But before he could ask a single question,
Janetta pressed her advantage, her voice breaking on a perfectly timed sob.
"I just wanted to see how she was doing. I shouldn't have bothered her. She got so agitated so quickly... I couldn't calm her down."
"..."
"I never thought she'd actually bring a weapon. If I had known, I would have run. I would never have let her hurt my baby..."
She completely buried her face in his shirt.
Clinging to him like a lifeline, her words deteriorated into broken whimpers.
"Seb, I'm so sorry... it's my fault. It's all my fault..."
She ignored her own grievous injuries entirely.
Something deep inside him felt profoundly off.
She was entirely too rational for a mother who had just been violently gutted.
Yet, this serene, self-sacrificing demeanor was exactly how she had always behaved.
"You should go check on her," Janetta urged softly, ever the saint.
Drained from the massive hemorrhage and the emergency surgery, she looked like a gust of wind could shatter her.
She remained heavily slumped against his chest.
Sebastian didn't push her away.
"There's no rush. I'm staying right here," he insisted.
Janetta didn't argue, letting out a compliant murmur.
A dense, heavy silence settled over the VIP suite.
It stretched on until Janetta finally broke it, her gaze shifting to stare intensely into his eyes.
"What is it?" he asked, his voice softening as he looked down at her.
