Helena stood frozen in place.
Her breathing grew shallow and labored.
Inside the hospital room, the nurses were completely oblivious to her presence in the hallway.
They were deep in conversation.
"Did you hear if they found a cornea for Ms. Ramirez?"
"I heard from a nurse in her ward that they found a match right here in our hospital, didn't they?"
"Yeah."
"It makes sense. Mr. Hayes has endless amounts of money, and any problem money can solve isn't really a problem. Besides, she only needs one cornea to restore her sight."
...
The nurses' gossip made Helena furrow her brow.
The suffocating sensation in her chest intensified.
She hadn't known the exact details of Janetta's condition.
But for some reason, hearing their exchange triggered a gut instinct that this had something to do with her.
Before she could even process the rising panic, the next words sent her spiraling into the abyss.
The nurse's next words pushed her completely off the edge.
"The cornea belongs to Ms. Wallace," one nurse whispered, dropping her voice.
"Don't go spreading rumors!" the other nurse hissed nervously.
"I saw the paperwork with my own eyes. I'm not making it up. But no one dares to prep the procedure yet. Word is, Mr. Hayes hasn't given the official green light."
...
The revelation left Helena utterly speechless, paralyzed by shock.
She never imagined Sebastian could be this downright ruthless.
She knew perfectly well that one of her own corneas had been irreparably damaged years ago at the Hayes Estate.
The vision in that eye was already severely impaired.
Even the possibility of surgical repair was completely uncertain.
In other words, she only had one healthy cornea left.
Was Sebastian seriously going to harvest her last good eye?
Just because Janetta needed it?
A horrifying realization dawned on her. That was why he had locked her up in Apex Villa, coming back every single day to keep a watchful eye on her.
