Her voice turned lethally flat. "And don't worry about Seb coming after you. I've already made sure he's occupied."
She delivered the statement with absolute certainty.
Looking into Janetta's eyes, Helena knew with horrifying clarity that this wasn't an empty bluff.
A violent tremor ripped through Helena's chest.
Every muscle in her body locked up as she stared back at the woman trying to destroy her.
"Go check. See for yourself if I'm lying," Janetta laughed, a sharp, grating sound.
"Tsk, tsk. Just imagine how agonizing his final moments were. So poetic, really. He died choking on his own fear, and he never even got to say goodbye to his beloved sister."
She spat the words like venom, relishing the kill.
The short distance between them evaporated completely as Janetta stepped flush against her.
Given Janetta's height advantage, she loomed over Helena like an executioner.
"What's wrong, Helena? Are you too much of a coward to face the truth?" she taunted.
Helena instinctively stumbled backward.
For every step Helena retreated, Janetta advanced.
"You hogged the title of Mrs. Hayes for seven years. Did you really think I was just going to let that slide?" Janetta's face was completely devoid of humanity.
"Don't worry. Wynn is dead, and soon you'll be heading down there to keep him company. Neither of you is making it out of this alive."
"Go ahead and hate me. It doesn't matter. You'll never find a single shred of evidence."
Janetta paused, letting the silence stretch.
When she spoke again, her eyes blazed with an inferno of pure malice.
"I am going to drag you through hell, Helena. I will strip you of every last thing you love until there is absolutely nothing left."
"Do you honestly believe Seb can protect you? Keep dreaming."
...
Helena couldn't stomach another word.
She violently shoved Janetta out of her way and broke into a desperate sprint toward the hospital exit.
Janetta stumbled back from the force of the push.
But she didn't try to stop her; she just stood there, watching her prey flee.
And just as she had promised, there wasn't a single bodyguard in sight, nor was Sebastian anywhere to be found.
As she ran, Helena suddenly remembered the phone call in the car.
It had been Janetta.
The ICU bed was completely empty. Wynn was nowhere to be found.
The sterile, vacant room practically screamed that Janetta had been telling the truth.
Helena knew that if Wynn had been discharged or moved, Sebastian would have rubbed it in her face.
He knew perfectly well that keeping Wynn alive was his ultimate leverage over her.
A world-ending panic crashed down on her.
She practically threw herself down the hallway toward the private suites.
This was a VIP floor; Wynn was the only patient assigned here.
There was only one ICU and one specialized recovery room.
If he had been moved out of intensive care, he had to be in that room.
She had been here before.
She found the door instantly and pushed it open.
Through the doorway, she saw nothing but pristine, untouched furniture.
Every piece of medical equipment was neatly stored away, and the bed was perfectly made.
There wasn't a single trace of Wynn Wallace.
