Helena returned to the VIP Ward just as the police arrived.
"Apologies, Mr. Hayes. This is a routine check," the officer said, glancing at Sebastian.
Since Janetta hadn't dropped her lawsuit, she remained relentlessly aggressive, even if she wasn't as frantic as she had been the past few days.
Her stance was completely unyielding.
It was obvious that Sebastian and Janetta had failed to reach an agreement, and that mounting pressure had inevitably trickled down to the authorities.
"She's in terrible shape. She can't handle a lengthy interrogation," Sebastian stated quietly, but his tone left no room for argument.
He blocked the doorway, refusing to let the police inside.
The officer frowned. "But Mr. Hayes—"
"You can handle this paperwork however you see fit, but you are not going in there," Sebastian cut him off.
"Regardless of standard procedures or the situation at hand, her physical safety comes first."
He enunciated every word with absolute clarity.
"If anything happens to her, tell your chief to answer to me," he finished, locking eyes with the officer.
It was a blatant threat.
The officer wasn't stupid. He understood perfectly.
"Understood," the officer nodded.
They quickly snapped a few photos of Helena resting in the hospital bed from the doorway.
They secured a copy of her medical records from the doctor, legally confirming she was unfit for discharge.
After a brief sweep of the surrounding environment, they backed off.
The officers left.
Sebastian stood outside the entire time, only turning to enter the room once they were out of sight.
Inside, Helena had witnessed the entire exchange.
As soon as he stepped through the door, she spoke up.
"Why didn't you let the police take me?" she asked bluntly.
"Isn't it much better to keep you here and torture you?" he fired back without missing a beat.
Helena didn't reply.
It made sense.
Torturing her right under his nose was far more satisfying to him than letting her rot in a cell.
Heh.
It felt like she would never be able to escape his grip.
Carter froze for a second, but quickly retreated.
Helena immediately turned to Sebastian. "Did something happen to my daughter?! Otherwise, Special Assistant Miles would never barge in looking so panicked."
Her voice trembled with sudden terror.
Without thinking, her slender fingers reached out and grabbed his arm.
It seemed this was the only kind of situation that would ever compel her to willingly touch him.
Sebastian looked down at her, his voice perfectly composed.
"Helena, you can rest assured on this one point. Until the stock transfer is fully finalized, nothing will happen to her."
His words left Helena suspended in an agonizing limbo—she didn't know whether to breathe a sigh of relief or let her heart pound out of her chest.
But it was the undeniable truth, and she couldn't argue with it.
As long as his corporate shares weren't secured, he had to keep their daughter alive.
Clinging to that thought, she tried to force herself to calm down.
Yet, a suffocating wave of dread settled heavily in her chest, refusing to dissipate.
It was only growing stronger.
It felt as though everything was about to spin completely out of control.
