Helena let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh in her mind.
Did he want her awake just so the stock transfer could go smoothly?
It was a suffocating, despair-inducing realization.
She knew better than anyone just how much he loathed her.
And the twisted origins of their marriage.
Any affection he showed was purely physical.
A carnal release behind closed doors, nothing more.
They were also hopelessly tangled in the shadow of Janetta Ramirez.
In this crowded dynamic, she had always been the one fooling herself.
Why was she still clinging to this?
She just wanted to give up.
But then she thought of her daughter, fighting for her life in an incubator.
And giving up became impossible.
Even in the suffocating grip of her nightmare, she continued to struggle.
"Lena?" Sebastian's voice broke through, unexpectedly gentle as his brows pulled together.
Hearing that tone, a single, crystalline tear slipped from the corner of her eye.
It was a chaotic swirl of emotions.
Emotions she couldn't even name.
Sebastian saw the tear. His frown deepened, and he fell silent.
For some inexplicable reason, a thousand words danced on his tongue.
But looking at her now, he couldn't voice a single one.
The hospital room descended into a heavy silence.
Her condition fluctuated like this for days.
Until Carter Miles's voice pierced the quiet from the hallway. "Mr. Hayes, Mr. Cheng is here for you."
Sebastian's eyes darkened as he swiftly stood up and headed for the door.
Before leaving, he turned to The Nurses.
"I want eyes on her 24/7. If anything happens, I am the first to know," he ordered coldly.
The Nurses nodded furiously, not daring to hesitate.
He stepped out of the room.
Mr. Cheng was waiting. "Mr. Hayes, the stock transfer is fully complete. You are now the majority shareholder. The board can no longer oppose your decisions."
Just as he arrived at the NICU doors, The Doctor stepped out.
"How is she?" Sebastian demanded, cutting straight to the chase.
His hands tightened into fists inside his pockets.
He didn't know if he was hoping the child had survived, or if it would have been kinder for her to slip away peacefully.
They all knew that the baby clinging to life meant she was suffering unimaginable agony.
The Doctor looked at him, still reeling in disbelief.
"Mr. Hayes, she is incredibly resilient. She crashed several times, and every time we thought she was gone, she would let out this faint little cry and pull through."
The Doctor sounded genuinely amazed.
Looking at the monitors, the baby was still painfully frail.
She hadn't grown an ounce since birth.
But somehow, her vital signs had stabilized.
No one knew if this was a medical miracle or just a fleeting final burst of life.
Sebastian stared at the tiny figure through the glass.
Since the moment she was born, he had never once held her.
