Helena listened, her heart hammering in her chest with sheer panic.
Sebastian's gaze grew dangerously dark as he stared at Helena.
She kept her mouth firmly shut.
The officer was clearly a rookie; he had absolutely no idea who Sebastian Hayes was.
Beside them, Skye stuck her tongue out, looking incredibly guilty.
"No, no, Mister Officer, you really got it wrong! She's my sister, and he's not my daddy either. I have a mommy and a daddy!" Skye practically tripped over her words in her rush to explain.
Now it was the rookie officer's turn to look completely dumbfounded.
The station chief, having just been informed of who was in his lobby, scrambled over to the scene.
Seeing the disaster unfolding, he immediately tore into the rookie. "What is wrong with you?!"
Then, he turned to Sebastian with a desperate, obsequious smile. "Mr. Hayes, Ms. Wallace, my deepest apologies. This was entirely our oversight for not recognizing you."
The rookie officer shrank back in terror, too scared to make a sound.
Sebastian, however, remained perfectly composed. "It's fine."
Helena watched him out of the corner of her eye.
He looked entirely unbothered; at least on the surface, he hadn't given anything away.
So, he wasn't overthinking it?
Clinging to that hope, Helena quickly steadied her nerves.
Skye stuck her tongue out again, looking quite bashful.
She shuffled over to Helena contritely. "I'm sorry, Lena. I called Julian earlier, and he said he was in Riverton. I told him I wanted to come, and he didn't say no. So I just sneaked out and came here without waiting for him to arrange it. I didn't mean to cause trouble."
Knowing she was in the wrong, Skye apologized in a small voice.
"You're saying Julian let you come?" Helena blinked in surprise.
Skye nodded vigorously. "Yeah! Otherwise, I'd never dare come alone. If Mommy found out and no one was here to protect me, I'd be dead meat!"
That revelation made Helena fall completely silent.
She thought back to what Julian had told her.
Without giving Claire a single second to reply, Skye hung up.
Watching this, Helena was caught between laughing and crying.
Skye proudly handed the phone back. "Done! I told Mommy."
Helena sighed helplessly.
She ended up sending Claire a text to explain the situation properly.
Claire replied via WhatsApp.
Claire: [That girl is... way too much trouble. While she's in Riverton, please keep a close eye on her. Don't let her eat random junk; she has allergies. And don't let her trick you—absolutely no ice cream, or she'll get an upset stomach.]
Claire carefully listed out all the instructions.
Helena already knew all of this by heart, but she read through the messages silently anyway.
Helena: [Got it. Don't worry.]
Just as Helena hit send, Skye's small hand suddenly tugged at her fingers.
