It wasn't until Sebastian Hayes got into his car that his grip tightened on the steering wheel, his brows pulling into a hard line. The predatory glint in his eyes darkened by the second.
Before today, he had ways to control Helena Wallace. But now, he feared she would use this incident as leverage against him. He needed to think carefully, to calculate the most foolproof way to handle the situation.
On one hand, Janetta Ramirez was pregnant. If she found out about Helena's pregnancy, the shock could be dangerous. After all, he was well aware of Janetta's ambitions.
On the other hand, Helena... His gaze turned somber, and his knuckles turned white against the leather wheel. He didn't know why, but the mere thought of Helena’s desperate urgency to leave him—even willing to get rid of their baby just to run off with Lance James—made him absolutely furious.
It was a suffocating wave of anger. With nowhere else to vent this frustration, he could only direct it at Helena.
In Sebastian's mind, everything was Helena's fault. This conviction grew stronger, cementing his inability to forgive her. He fired up the engine and sped back toward the hospital.
...
Inside the hospital room.
By the time Helena opened her eyes, the worst of her physical crisis had passed. Through the glass window of her door, she could still see Sebastian's bodyguards standing watch outside.
She looked down and let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. Resting both hands gently over her flat stomach, she stroked it with quiet tenderness.
"Baby, if there ever comes a day when Mommy can't keep you, please don't blame me, okay?" she whispered to her unborn child. "I just don't want you to be born into a world like this. I'm so sorry."
