Of course she knew that.
But she couldn't fathom why he was suddenly bringing it up.
Caught off guard, she remained silent, simply furrowing her brows as she stared him down.
"Sebastian, snooping through someone else's medical records is incredibly inappropriate," she said, her voice raspy and thick with exhaustion.
"She's been trying to get in touch with Professor Xander, hasn't she? But you haven't received a single reply," he stated, cutting straight to the chase.
Her eyes immediately snapped up to meet his.
Her entire body went rigid with tension.
He didn't draw out her anxiety, delivering the final blow smoothly. "I know Professor Xander."
"And why on earth should I believe you?" she asked, forcing herself to stay grounded.
Back when they were married, she had never once heard him mention knowing the elusive surgeon.
Why the sudden connection now?
But as she forced her brain to process the information, it began to make terrifying sense.
To Sebastian, Skye was nothing more than a tool—a completely insignificant pawn.
Why would he go out of his way to find a world-class doctor for a kid he didn't care about?
The answer was obvious: leverage. It made perfect, chilling sense.
"What would I gain by lying to you? Besides, the truth will reveal itself soon enough. If I intervene, Xander will reach out to your people. If I don't, you'll remain completely ignored by his team. Isn't that right?" he asked lazily.
He was effectively handing her the power to test his claim.
She stayed silent.
Because she had no way to argue against his logic.
He didn't need to lie about this.
Controlling her access to Xander was the ultimate trump card to force her submission.
He understood exactly how to manipulate people's weaknesses.
"Go get some rest. I'll let you know when there's an update," he said, effectively ending the conversation.
Under his uncompromising stare, she mechanically stood up.
She had been wired with adrenaline for so long that the sudden movement triggered a dizzying drop in her blood sugar.
She stumbled, her knees buckling.
Slowly, her breathing evened out as the pain subsided.
Without a second thought, Sebastian left the room to buy breakfast.
He picked up some light, easily digestible dishes—something Skye would need when she woke up as well.
Not long after he left, Helena's eyes fluttered open.
She was too anxious to sleep deeply.
Her constant worry for Skye pulled her back to consciousness.
Waking up to find an IV drip in her arm, she remained perfectly still, not uttering a word.
The resting room was dead silent. She was completely alone.
Her thoughts immediately drifted to Sebastian.
Had he finally left?
But her mind kept circling back to his explosive claim about knowing Xander.
He really had no reason to lie; a simple phone call would expose him instantly.
