Helena's indulgence of Skye was so boundless that even Claire Campbell found it ridiculous at times.
Because of that, it had never crossed Skye's mind that Helena might actually say no.
Helena looked at the little girl and kept her voice painfully steady. "Then you can go with Sebastian. I'm going home. Once you're done, he can drop you off, or I'll send the driver to pick you up."
With that, Helena turned on her heel, fully intending to walk away.
It was the first time in years she had let her own emotional exhaustion override Skye's wishes.
It wasn't intentional; she just had absolutely nothing left in the tank.
If she stayed in this room for another second, she was terrified of what she might do.
Suppressing her trauma was one thing.
But the inevitable explosion would be catastrophic.
Skye instantly picked up on the shift.
She realized Helena was genuinely upset.
Her bottom lip quivered, a sudden wave of hurt washing over her.
She had never been rejected by Helena before.
Panicking, she trotted after her. "Lena, wait! I'll go back with you."
She was terrified Helena was actually going to abandon her.
Helena stopped, her silence heavy.
That was when Sebastian stood up, his brow furrowing as he closed the distance between them.
His hand shot out, calloused fingers wrapping firmly around her slender wrist.
"There's no need to take your issues out on a child!" he rumbled, his voice dropping to a dangerous low. "It's just dinner. It won't take that long."
Helena had been fighting a losing battle to keep her composure.
But his touch was the match that lit the powder keg. Her restraint evaporated in an instant.
A bitter scoff tore from her lips as she aggressively ripped her arm from his grip.
"I'm taking it out on a child?" she fired back, her eyes blazing. "You're holding her hostage to force my hand, and you want to stand there and act like you hold the moral high ground?"
Sebastian's jaw tightened. "Is this really the time and place for this conversation?"
How could she let Skye get caught in the crossfire?
She had already failed this child in so many ways.
Dropping to her knees, she pulled Skye into a tight embrace.
"Skye, sweetie, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have spoken like that. If you want to go out for dinner, I'll go with you, okay?" she murmured, desperately trying to soothe the trembling girl.
Skye just stood there, too frightened to even nod.
Sebastian watched the display, immediately clocking Helena's erratic emotional state.
His sharp mind calculated the shift, and he swiftly changed tactics.
"Skye, Lena is just really tired today. She didn't mean to lose her temper, and she definitely isn't trying to ruin your dinner."
"How about I take you out, and we let Lena go home and get some rest?"
Sebastian crouched down, leveling his gaze with the little girl's to reassure her.
Skye fiercely shook her head. "I'm going with Lena. If Lena doesn't go, I'm not going."
They were at a total stalemate.
