It was a truth she had lived through firsthand.
"Where did you hear all of that?" he asked with casual indifference.
"Rumors," she countered smoothly.
He let out a faint, cynical chuckle, neither confirming nor denying her summary.
His complete lack of defensiveness made it impossible for her to read his true intentions.
She refrained from interrogating him further; pushing too hard would inevitably raise his suspicions.
The last thing she wanted was to back herself into a dangerous corner.
"What we have isn't what you think," he finally admitted, breaking the silence.
She arched an eyebrow, silently urging him to continue.
"I did care for her once, that much is true. But the bulk of my indulgence stemmed from guilt. When I was forced into a marriage with my ex-wife, I felt I had betrayed her. As compensation, I gave her whatever she demanded."
She was genuinely shocked that he would voluntarily expose the twisted roots of his marriage.
She remained perfectly still, absorbing every word.
Of course, she already knew the agonizing history.
It was that very guilt that had allowed Janetta to strip her of everything she held dear.
Janetta was a master manipulator, weaponizing his conscience to extract endless concessions.
"My guilt blinded me. I accommodated her most unreasonable demands purely out of a misguided sense of duty," he confessed.
Throughout the confession, his dark eyes never left her face.
For a fleeting, dizzying second, she felt as though he was offering the explanation directly to her, begging for her understanding.
She ruthlessly crushed the thought, maintaining her icy composure.
She continued to play the role of a detached observer.
"But there comes a point where compliance turns to exhaustion. You compromise so much that you eventually run out of patience, and every shred of affection you once harbored rots away completely."
"Are you trying to tell me you no longer love your wife, Mr. Hayes?" she asked with a mocking half-smile.
He didn't immediately answer the challenge.
She didn't press him for one.
At that exact moment, the designer hurried back into the room.
"Ms. Wallace, the alterations are complete. Shall we try it on again?" the woman asked timidly.
