Helena pressed her fingers to her temples, a deep frown carving into her face.
She realized that the harder she tried to dig into her blank past, the more her head throbbed.
The pain would escalate from a dull ache to a blinding spike.
Flashes of blurry, chaotic imagery would dance across her mind, but she could never quite bring them into focus.
Her thoughts snapped to the glass of milk she was given every night before bed.
Sebastian always brought it to her himself.
She had never been in the habit of drinking warm milk.
But he insisted it would help her sleep.
And truthfully, her sleep had been plagued by restless anxiety.
Whenever she drank it, she slept like the dead, rarely waking up in the middle of the night.
Because it worked, she had never questioned it.
But now, the realization hit her like a bucket of ice water. Was the milk drugged?
Was he slipping something into her drink to ensure her mind stayed foggy and compliant?
Had her brain actually been trying to heal this entire time, only to be suppressed by whatever he was feeding her?
Her sightless eyes narrowed into an icy, calculating glare.
Sebastian was still speaking on the phone, his voice dropping to an indistinct murmur.
She couldn't make out the rest of the conversation.
Forcing her racing heart to steady, she called out into the quiet house. "Sebastian? Are you talking to someone?"
The second her voice echoed in the hall, his footsteps sounded on the stairs, rapidly approaching.
"Were you heading out to the patio? The wind is picking up, make sure you wrap your scarf tight," he said, his tone dripping with fake warmth.
She didn't reply immediately, standing perfectly still like a statue.
"What's wrong?" he asked, stepping closer.
She gave a small, dismissive shake of her head. "Nothing. I just realized I'm a little hungry."
"What are you craving?" His patience seemed endless.
"Noodles," she replied evenly.
"How about Beef Noodles?"
"That sounds perfect."
"Go sit at the table and wait for me," he chuckled softly.
