Helena flinched and rushed out of the room to see what had happened.
Susan had collapsed on the floor. Heart pounding, Helena hurried over and helped her up.
"Susan!" she cried out in panic.
As soon as she touched the older woman's skin, she realized Susan was burning up with a severe fever.
Combined with her age, a sudden dizzy spell had caused her to lose her footing and fall.
Helena carefully guided her to the sofa and immediately dug through the first-aid kit.
They were completely out of fever reducers.
Without a second thought, Helena grabbed a handful of cash and threw on her coat, ready to run downstairs to the pharmacy.
Susan frantically grabbed her sleeve, gesturing wildly in sign language that it was too dangerous.
"Don't worry, I'm just running to the corner for some medicine. It'll be fine. I'm using cash, so no one can track it," Helena assured her gently.
Reluctantly, Susan nodded.
Helena didn't think much of it and hurried downstairs.
It would only take ten minutes. What could possibly happen?
Besides, the pharmacy was just a few dozen yards down the street.
Wrapped in an oversized coat, her pregnancy was entirely unnoticeable. She looked incredibly frail.
She quickly bought the fever reducers and antibiotics, paid with cash, and discreetly stepped out of the store.
Moments after she left, the piercing screech of tires braking hard echoed down the street.
Sebastian had spotted her.
He slammed on the brakes and leaped out of the car to chase her down.
But the moment his boots hit the pavement, he lost sight of her in the crowd.
His gaze turned predatory.
Carter Miles arrived on the scene shortly after. "Mr. Hayes."
"Lock down this entire grid. She's here," Sebastian ordered with absolute certainty.
"We've already swept this area," Carter replied quickly. "Except for The Garrison Apartments up ahead. It's a military compound, so we couldn't go in without causing a major incident."
It was Helena's favorite brand, and Cypress Road happened to be their only location.
Though Sebastian had rarely paid attention to her in the past, he had seen her buy their Cinnamon Swirls enough times for the detail to subconsciously stick in his mind.
Without a second thought, he strode directly toward the bakery.
And there she was. That familiar, slender silhouette.
Helena.
It had been a full month since she disappeared, and this was the first time he was laying eyes on her.
She had lost weight.
She was supposed to be pregnant, yet there was no physical sign of it.
She looked so fragile that a strong gust of wind might knock her over.
She was standing at the counter picking out pastries, her hand subconsciously resting over her stomach.
Her lowered gaze was incredibly tender.
Sebastian stood frozen near the entrance, a complex storm of emotions surging in his chest.
