"But her injuries were complicated. By the time they finished treating her, you had already eaten and gone back to the factory. I tried calling, but you wouldn't pick up..."

He sighed. "As for moving Yvette into The Sterling Residences... I assumed you would have done the exact same thing in my shoes, so I figured I'd just let you know after the fact. The point is, it was my fault. I shouldn't have made a unilateral decision without consulting you first."

"That morning, I spoke without thinking. I didn't want you to move out."

His dark gaze locked onto hers. "Julian said you've been miserable for the last three years, and that it's largely my fault. If that's the truth, tell me. I can change."

Jarrod had never spoken this much to her in one sitting. His tone was startlingly sincere, making it obvious he was offering an olive branch and genuinely wanted to salvage their marriage.

A bitter lump formed in Stella's throat.

She offered a faint smile. "Thank you for explaining all this, Jarrod. But to me, these past three years were just a mutually beneficial partnership. It wasn't about being happy or unhappy. It had an expiration date, and that time is up."

"When you said you didn't want a divorce and asked me to reconsider, I actually struggled with it for a while. But ultimately, I still feel we're wrong for each other. That's why I said no."
