"So, the fact that you're both still here is the best possible outcome. You've already wasted three years. Don't waste any more. Just be together," Summer urged gently.

Stella remained silent, but the walls around her heart were crumbling.

Summer could see the shift and wasn't the least bit surprised. She knew Stella still deeply loved Jarrod; otherwise, she wouldn't have been so easily swayed.

After saying goodbye to Summer and Gabriel, Stella checked the time and decided to head back to the hospital.

For the past few weeks, she had visited Jarrod every day, but she always timed her visits for when his family or the medical staff were present. Consequently, Jarrod rarely got a moment alone to speak with her.

When she arrived, the hospital corridor was dead quiet.

Stella gently pushed open the door to Jarrod's room, only to freeze. She watched as Jarrod took a handful of his prescribed medication and tossed it straight into the trash can. The sudden movement clearly pulled at his wound, as all the color drained from his face.

"What are you doing?" Stella demanded, her brows snapping together.

Jarrod clearly hadn't expected anyone to walk in. He jolted, quickly masking the panic in his eyes with a forced, casual smile. "I was just about to take my meds, but they slipped and fell into the trash."

Stella wasn't buying a word of it. Leaving aside the fact that he had deliberately dismissed his private nurses just to take his medication alone, there was no physical way pills could "slip" from his hand into a trash can located several feet away from the bed.

"Jarrod, are you purposely refusing your medication so you won't heal?" Stella asked, her tone completely uncompromising.

Jarrod lowered his gaze, his voice thick with raw vulnerability. "Stella, I'm just terrified that the moment I'm fully healed, you'll stop coming. You'll never see me again."

Stella was so infuriated by his logic she almost laughed. "Are you a child? You're literally destroying your own body just because you're scared I won't visit?!"

Jarrod looked up at her, utterly lost as to where she stood. His eyes swam with anxious uncertainty, and he stayed silent.

Stella couldn't resist twisting the knife just a little. "When you forced me to sign those divorce papers, I explicitly warned you that once it was done, there would be no second chances. You made your choice, so you need to face the consequences. What is playing the tragic martyr supposed to achieve now?"

Panic flooded Jarrod's eyes. "Stella, I'm so sorry. But you were put in danger twice, and I was terrified. I couldn't gamble with your life. I honestly thought that if I pushed you away, you'd be safe..."

Stella kept her expression meticulously blank. "You could have told me the truth. I told you I could go abroad for a while. We didn't have to divorce."
