Chapter 2
I smashed my way through the mansion one room at a time.
By the time I was done, the entire Sterling estate looked like a war zone.
I walked barefoot across the shards scattered everywhere, but I felt nothing.
It was like my heart had split open and hollowed me out from the inside.
Outside the room, I heard the staff whispering.
“She was bound to snap. Her husband spent their wedding night with another woman. And that woman’s
pregnant.”
“She just married into this family and ended up spending her wedding night alone. Poor thing.”
“Poor him, more like it. He married a lunatic. What rotten luck.”
That night, I dreamed of the Adrian I use to

The man who once climbed the steps of a hilltop chapel on his knees and prayed to God to keep me alive
when I was sick.
The man who used to pull me into his arms whenever thunder rolled and whisper against my hair, ‘Don’t be
scared. I’m here.”
In the dream, he was holding me.
And somehow I was still freezing.
Curling tighter against him and reaching out on instinct, my hand closed on empty air.
I woke with a jolt, realizing it had only been a dream.
Last night had been Wednesday,
He had gone to Sienna.
When I picked up my phone, push alerts were already exploding across the screen.

Everyone had been watching.
The second Adrian left me on our wedding night, the news broke.
By morning, it was trending everywhere online.
I gripped my phone so hard my fingertips turned white.
Then I let out a cold laugh and went straight to the station.
With a scandal that explosive, how could I stay out of it?
So that morning, on the news desk, the legal wife in that three-person mess went on-air and delivered the
entertainment segment herself.
As the reaction was instant, the internet went wild.
“What the hell are you doing?” Adrian stormed into the studio.
I caught a whiff of his lingering lust, mingled with a hint of jasmine, which made my stomach churn.
I caught a whiff of his lingering lust, m
I looked at him, pale but smiling, and lifted a brow.
“I’m working,” I said. “I’m reading the news.”
If they insisted on having no shame, then I had no problem tearing the last scraps of dignity off this mess in
public.
“Audrey, this has gone too far.” His tone was gentle, but his words made me feel as if I were in an ice cave.
“Sienna was so frightened by the dead rat your fans sent her that she almost miscarried.”
Then he said, quietly, “If you make a mess, you pay for it.”
His security team moved before I could react, their hands locking around my arms like steel.
They dragged me to the reflecting pool and shoved me under.
Water slammed over my face, searing into my nose, while my lungs felt like they were on fire.
The pressure in my chest built fast and vicious, and the edges of my vision started to blur.
Through the roar in my ears, through the chaos and flashing lights and the horrified gasps from coworkers
around us, I looked up at him.
Elegant and untouched, he stood above me, watching me struggle with a cold, remote air, as if I were
nothing.
One second.

Three.
“That’s enough.”
They yanked me back out.
I collapsed to the floor coughing so hard I thought my ribs would crack.
Adrian looked down at me.
“Audrey,” he said, “let’s talk.”
Behind him, his men shut down the live feed and cleared the studio.
