The water is cool, but not as cold as I thought it would be. I'm standing on the edge of the pier, feeling the current so I can get acquainted with it. Its a lot more peaceful than the current that runs through our house, but like most silent water, it's vast. There's no real way of pinpointing what's where.
I straighten up when Oliver comes over to me. I smile and reach out of the silent spectator, waiting in the darkness below. I know it doesn't like that I am summoning the way 1 am. Svetlana sets a bucket of fish beside me and takes a deep breath.
I can't allow myself to get a single scratch. Ragnar would for sure forcefully take me home, and I would be the one to blame. Aside from that, I want to see it. We don't have these back home. Maybe because of the other water affinity users. Sirens are predators of the ocean; maybe we're what keeps them away from our shores.
"Fuck, Oliver stumbles away when the sea monster begins to surface.
Water bursts all around us as his head breaks the surface. A loud, ear-piercing screech comes from it. A warning. I dont know why I can feel it, but I know he doesn't mean to hurt me. I reach for one of the fish in the bucket and gather some spit. It screeches again and uses its tail to splash up the water behind him. I spit on the fish and throw it up in the air.
The serpent catches it and swallows the whole thing. I reach out for it to find that it's got a whole lot of water running through it. More than I could have imagined.
When it goes to demand more, I slow the water enough to confuse it. He looks around, stunned. It looks like he's looking for someone in particular.
"You're terrifying,' I say, calling its attention. It looks down at me.
l've never seen the color combination he has on any black stone or glass before. His scales are beyond beautiful and meant to help him fade into the darkness without being spotted. He lets out a low, playful sound and shakes his body, splashing the water. I catch it before it can reach me and look up at him with a smile.
"You're just a baby, aren't you?" I sit at the edge of the pier.
He comes closer and looks at the bucket beside me before letting out a more polite screech. I laugh and take one. He swims back playfully. I toss it up, and he catches it. He swims around in a circle, causing a swirl. He then swims into it so it can spin him. I look over at Oliver, who is staring at me with disbelief while the serpent plays a couple of feet away from us. I laugh at his expression.
"I've seen that thing jump up to take the fishermen clean off their decks." he crosses his arms over his chest. "And here you are treating it like a pet."
"Big scary guys just need a little extra patience," | smile. I take the last fish from the bucket and hold it out.
The serpent comes closer and leans into me to smell it. I pull it back when he tries to take it. I spin the water a little more and make him come closer. I hold the fish behind me and raise my hand out for it. It straightens up, showing me that he's a lot bigger than I am. I laugh and take a step back to show him that I can care less. He makes a low, clicking sound and comes completely out of the water.
I lower the speed of the water once again; he lowers his body to be closer to me. He sparkles beautifully in the sun. He shakes the water out. I hold my hand out to keep him from spraying me when he spits.
"That wasn't nice, and you still didn't get me." I hold my hand up again. "You want to give it another go?" He stares at me for a bit again and then lowers his head enough for me to reach for him. I step closer, and he finishes closing the distance. His scales are smooth. He shakes again when I slowly move from his mouth to the back of his head.
