Nina didn’t answer right away. One piece of glassy emerald would be more than enough to make jewelry for her grandma and Elaine’s mom.

Letting one piece go wouldn’t really cost her anything. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that this old man was somehow familiar to her.

Loren said, “I want this emerald to make a set of jewelry for my daughter before I pass away. I only have less than half a year left. My daughter has been missing for over thirty years, and we still haven’t found her.

“I want to have the jewelry made in her name. If my family ever inds her, at least this will be the first gift I can give her as her father.”

Worried Nina might say no, he quickly added, “Miss, you have two pieces. I heard you talking with your friend. You only need one set of jewelry, and one piece is plenty for that.

“Please, I’m just a father hoping to do something for his child.”

Nina was silent for a moment, and then turned to Elaine. “What do you think?”

“It’s yours, you decide,” Elaine said. “Honestly, emerald isn’t really my thing. I’m only thinking of making something for my mom since she likes it. It’s not like I have any use for the extra one anyway.”

Nina thought for a moment, pulled out her phone, and opened her banking app. “30 million, wire it over.”

Loren’s face lit up. “Alright.”

Then he signaled, and a man in a black suit came over from across the street, calling out respectfully, “Dad.”

The man hesitated for a moment, but didn’t argue. He was abou to take out his phone when Nina interrupted, “No, just 30 million.”

Loren was a bit taken aback. If it were anyone else, they would’ve jacked up the price right away.

Not only did she not ask for more, she even turned him down when he offered her extra.

But he just froze for a moment and then said, “Thank you.”

Loren’s son wired the money to Nina, and Elaine gave them the glassy emerald.

Ryan stayed silent the whole time, but his gaze at the old man was piercing.

He thought, ‘His surname is Carroll. Not many people in the country have this surname. The richest guy in Roveilia is also a

Carroll.

Roveilia is at least 600 miles away from Riverdale. Why would travel all that way just to seek out Nina for the emerald? If the Carroll family wanted something, they could get it without een trying

Ryan couldn’t help but suspect what Loren was really after.

But after Loren bought the stone, he just left with his son, didn’t say anything else to Nina before heading out.

Ryan frowned, but when he saw Nina watching Loren walk away he relaxed a little.

Nina just watched Loren’s back for a few seconds, and then slipped into the car without another word.

Meanwhile, once Loren got in the car, his son, Cheney Carroll, couldn’t hold back anymore.

He said, “Dad, we’ve got plenty of glassy emeralds at home. Why come all the way to Riverdale? The doctors said you really shouldn’t be doing all this traveling with your health.”
