Chapter 113

Robert was just as clueless. “I have no idea. Mom never liked making a fuss, so she hasn’t celebrated her birthday in years James, do you remember?”

James turned to Sarah, looking guilty. He’d forgotten, too. After, Sarah hadn’t had a birthday party for more than ten years now. But that was something she insisted on herself.

James couldn’t recall Sarah’s exact words, but the general meaning was that she didn’t want to be extravagant, so the just stopped celebrating a birthday.

So for all these years, Sarah never had a birthday, and none of them ever dared to mention it. Mainly, they were worried that if anyone tried to organize a birthday party for her on their own, she’d probably get mad.

The Swanson sons were always good to Sarah. Whenever Sarah aid something, they’d do it, no questions asked

When Sarah caught the looks on her sons’ faces, she felt a pang of disappointment. She thought, ‘Sure, I was the one who said no birthdays, but seeing my kids forget the date still stung a little.’

“Mom’s birthday is on July 15th. That’s only two weeks from now Joanna, who’d been quiet all this time, suddenly chimed

Michael and Robert exchanged embarrassed looks. All the brothers had blanked on Sarah’s birthday, but Joanna remembered it clearly.

Nina swept her gaze over James, Robert, and Michael, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “You’re truly ungrateful”

James and his brothers felt embarrassed, totally mortified at being roasted by Nina in front of everyone. Still, they couldn’t pin this on her. It was their own fault for forgetting Sarah’s birthday.

“Since none of you have any plans, I’ll handle Sarah’s birthday party,” Nina said coolly. “Any objections?”

Michael instantly got worked up. “You want to take charge? Sarah’s birthday is way too important to let you handle it

“Or what, you want to do it, Uncle Michael?” Nina snarked, a mocking smile playing on her lips. “You can’t even remember Sarah’s birthday. Think you could do any better?”

Michael’s face turned red. “Yeah, I messed up forgetting Sarah’s Birthday, but it’s been ages since the Swanson family held a birthday party. What if you screw it up?

“Nina, I know you care about Sarah, but this isn’t something to take lightly. Who’s in charge should be a family decision; we all need to talk it through.”

Because of Ryan, Michael kept his tone extra respectful of Nina. In fact, Michael didn’t have any beef with Nina. Especially knowing how much she suffered during those years she was gone, he actually felt bad for her.

Whatever Nina did and Judy said, he just tuned it out. But Sarah birthday was different. She’d spent years shutting the idea down; now that she’d said yes, it had to be nothing short of luxury.

This party would be the most high-profile event the Swanson family had hosted in years, with all the circle’s movers and shakers on the guest list. If anything went wrong, the Swanson family would be a joke.

“Michael’s right,” Robert said. “This isn’t like your welcome-back party; something you can just leave for one of the younger generation. We should handle this important party.”

Nina turned to James. “Dad, what do you think?”

James paused for a moment, locking eyes with Nina. For some reason, he felt a hint of threat in her gaze. After thinking it over, he said, “Since Nina’s the one who suggested it, let her take charge. I trust-”

Before he could finish, Nina stood up. “That’s final. I’m taking charge of the birthday party; every last detail is on me.” Her tone made it clear there was no room for debate.
