His voice cracked as Carl started to cry. “That’s what he told me. I have no idea how he knew. Ms. Swanson, I’ve told you everything. I don’t know who that guy is, and the money’s still in my account. I haven’t spent a dime.

“My son’s buried in debt, my mom is in the hospital, and he threatened to kill my whole family. I couldn’t say no.

“And I swear, I had no idea that charm was laced with poison. I thought it was just some regular charm,” Carl choked out, practically sick with regret.

Life with the Swansons was good. Sarah was always gentle, never harsh with anyone. Every holiday, she’d hand out gifts to all the staff and drivers. Carl really appreciated that.

Even if the guy had threatened his life, he never would’ve gone through with it. But when the guy threatened him with his family, he was backed into a corner and had to say yes.

Nina didn’t say anything for a while. After a bit; she simply waved her hand, telling Felix to drag Carl out. Then she turned to Ethan. “Ethan, mind grabbing my laptop from upstairs?”

Ethan nodded and dashed upstairs. He was back in no time, laptop in hand.

Nina took the laptop and her fingers danced across the keyboard, moving so fast that it was almost a blur.

Ethan just stared, totally dumbfounded. ‘Holy crap,’ Ethan thought. ‘Are her hand’s even human? How is she so fast?’

He was a software developer himself, and he always thought he was pretty good with computers, way better than most people. But next to Nina, he felt like a total amateur.

Watching Nina so focused, Ethan couldn’t help but wonder what she had gone through all these years. He wondered, ‘Seriously, is there anything she can’t do?’

Nina worked on the laptop for a few minutes before finally stopping.

Ethan peered at the screen, scratching his head. “Seriously? There’s no way to tell who that guy is.”

The screen showed some surveillance footage from outside the hospital. A guy dressed head-to-toe in black, with a mask and a hat, was passing something to Carl. His head was lowered so much that they couldn’t even see his eyes.

Nina stayed silent, slowly tapping her fingers along the edge of the laptop, her gaze glued to the figure in the video.

Whoever this was, they’d planned everything out. She grabbed every clip from the street cams, tracking every step this guy took after he showed up. But in every single shot, his face was always hidden.

The day Sarah went out, traffic was a nightmare for Ethan on his way to the office.

Nina remembered that just as Ethan was about to leave that day, he got a call. Someone from a partner company wanted to meet at nine AM. But traffic was insane at that time.

Not wanting to be late, Ethan ended up borrowing her motorcycle to get to work.

As for how that guy managed to know Sarah would be heading out that day, Nina had no way of knowing. But one thing was certain. Whoever it was, they knew the Swansons’ routines inside out.

‘Who the hell is it?’ Nina wondered.

Except for Vivian, who was seriously messed up, the rest of the Swansons might have their quirks, but none of them had ever done anything truly evil.

Especially Sarah. She’d grown up in Riverdale, had connections all over the place, and never made a single enemy.

Anyone who knew Sarah had nothing but praise for her. Whether she was young or old, there wasn’t a single person in all of Riverdale who had a bad word to say about her.

But whoever was behind this was clearly out to kill Sarah. One poisoning wasn’t enough. They tried again, just to make sure she’d never wake up.

Nina kept her eyes glued to the footage for ages, then suddenly snapped the laptop shut and got to her feet. “I need a break. I’m heading to bed.”

Ethan blinked in surprise. “You’re just going to stop?”

He still wanted to hunt down whoever poisoned Sarah. That bastard was ruthless. Poisoning Sarah wasn’t enough. They even tried to pin it on him. If Nina hadn’t had his back, he would’ve been totally screwed.

Nina glanced up, her gaze sweeping over the Swansons, a sly smile playing on her lips. “No need to keep digging. He’ll show up sooner or later.”
