Nina felt a wave of frustration wash over her. Scarlet had taken Nina over a decade ago, but she’d never once talked about her own life.

Even when it came to sending Nina back to the Swanson family, Scarlet didn’t say a word. She just decided for her, no warning, no explanation.

Nina couldn’t help feeling pissed. After all these years together, it was like Scarlet didn’t trust her at all. So, when Scarlet ran into trouble, Nina didn’t even get a chance to figure out how to help before everything went sideways.

“Yeah,” Felix said. “They sent a whole squad this time. The guy we caught is one of the top five assassins in the Blood Reaper’ Organization. When they send someone that high up, you know the job is high-stakes and tough as hell.”

Good thing Simon had that knockout powder Nina gave him. And since the Blood Reaper Organization was all about the mission, when their leader got knocked out, they just grabbed the potions and ditched their own guy.

That’s the only reason they managed to nab one of them.

If it hadn’t gone down without the clues from that guy, tracking them would’ve been a nightmare.

“But the guy swallowed a suicide pill before we could get anything useful out of him,” Felix said.

Felix only realized it was the Blood Reaper Organization because of the tattoo the guy was sporting. Truth was, he didn’t get a single word out of that assassin before the guy took his own life.

Nina’s brows drew together, her expression turning serious. Then she said, “Hold off on the investigation. Have everyone pull out.”

Felix was stunned. “Why?”

Nina’s eyes narrowed. “I have to protect Scarlet’s daughter.”

If they could track down Scarlet’s place, it was only a matter of time before they found Nina, too. And once they did, they’d definitely dig up the fact that Scarlet had a daughter.

Those potions were clearly a big deal to them, and since Scarlet was the one who developed them, they’d probably want to get their hands on her and force her to keep working on them. If Scarlet refused, Miranda would be her Achilles’ heel.

Felix looked confused. “Scarlet’s daughter?”

Nina didn’t answer. She just pulled out her phone and called Simon. “Send some guys to the Hawthorne family. Make sure Miranda’s safe. But don’t let anyone notice you.”

She couldn’t keep tracking down the potions right now. If she did, the enemy might end up tracing everything back to Miranda.

The potions were already lost, so she’d have to figure out another way to handle this. For now, it was better to keep things quiet and not alert the other side.

After hanging up, Nina had a quick word with Felix and then went downstairs with Elaine. Ryan was so badly injured. She needed to give the Foster family some answers.

Downstairs, Maria was pacing anxiously. As soon as Nina appeared, the four Foster members-shot to their feet. Maria blurted out, “How is he? Is Ryan going to be alright?”

“The poison’s out of his system now,” Nina said quietly, her lips pressed together. “I’m really sorry. This happened because of

me.”

“As long as he’s okay, that’s all that matters,” Maria said, taking Nina’s hand. “Come on, girl, no need to apologize. I know my grandson.

“If he doesn’t want to do something, nobody can force him. If he went into danger knowing the risks, he must’ve had his reasons. Don’t blame yourself.”

After a moment, Maria asked, “Is he okay to leave Riverdale in his current condition?”

Nina looked up, surprised. “You guys are leaving?”

“Something came up in Betrico. We were supposed to head out tonight,” Maria said. “He’s the head of the Foster family. There are some things only he can handle.”

Nina paused for a second and then pulled a small bottle of pills from her pocket. “He’ll wake up in about an hour. Make sure he takes these meds with him, and he won’t have any trouble traveling.”

Ryan wasn’t badly hurt. The real problem was poison. Now that the poison had been dealt with, he was basically fine.

Maria let out a sigh of relief and then turned to Nina. “Ryan mentioned you’re hosting a birthday party for your grandma. If our trip to Betrico goes smoothly, we’ll make sure to attend.”

“I’ll send you an invitation,” Nina replied. She’d already planned to invite the Foster family to Sarah’s birthday party. She just hadn’t gotten around to ordering the invitations yet.

Maria talked with Nina for a while, then Nina said her goodbyes and headed out. She needed to take a moment and figure out how she was going to help Scarlet.

The Swanson family was another thing she had to deal with. People and problems were waiting for her. She couldn’t keep putting it off any longer.
