Chapter 136
Chapter 136
For the past few days, Nina hadn’t gone anywhere. She’d just been at home, helping Sarah recover.
Now, whenever the Swansons saw Nina, they’d steer clear of her.
Even Linda and Judy, no matter how much they secretly despised Nina, didn’t dare let it show anymore.
They were terrified Nina might have Ryan teach them a lesson, too.
Vivian, Martin, and Lily had all started keeping their heads down.
Vivian and Lily spent these days immersed in piano practice, and sometimes the piano’s graceful notes floated through the villa.
Except for mealtimes, Vivian and Lily did their best to stay out of Nina’s way. They barely showed up at Sarah’s place anymore, either.
Even though Lily hadn’t been over to see Sarah, she still remembered the recognition party Sarah had talked about throwing for Nina.
After her spat with Nina, Sarah had frozen her card. Lily had been having a rough time lately. She hadn’t bought any new clothes or jewelry in forever.
If Vivian hadn’t secretly slipped her some cash, Lily would’ve been totally broke.
But Vivian didn’t dare help Lily out too much, worried that Sarah might catch on.
So, aside from practising piano, Lily spent most of her time planning Nina’s recognition party.
She hoped that by throwing a successful party, she could change Sarah’s opinion of her and win back her allowance.
After all, without money, she couldn’t do a thing.
As for Martin, he’d pretty much moved into the company. He was practically a ghost at home. No one ever saw him around, and nobody had any idea what he was working on.
With no one causing drama, the Swanson residence was a lot more peaceful these days.
That day, just as Nina brought over the healing foods she’d made herself for Sarah, Hazel showed up.
Hazel spoke in a low voice, “Nina, can you step outside for a minute?”
Nina glanced at her, reminded Sarah to finish the food, and then followed Hazel out.
Right now, it was work hours, so everyone with a job was at work.
The ones without jobs were out and about, doing their own thing.
Other than the staff, there was no one else around.
”
Nina and Hazel stopped at the staircase. “What’s up?” Nina asked
Hazel hesitated, then whispered, “Nina, I was wondering if I could borrow some money to take art lessons.”
Before Nina could respond, Hazel hurried to add, “I promise I’ll pay you back. It might take me a while, though. I’ll have to wait until I graduate and get a job.”

Chapter 136
Hazel had been mulling it over for ages, and now she finally figured things out.
Nina had given her this shot, and she really wanted to make the most of it.
If she could carve out a place for herself in the art world, she could finally take her mom and leave the Swanson family behind.
Then she’d never have to bow to anyone ever again.
Nina gave Hazel a long look. Then she asked, “Have you really thought it through?”
“I have,” Hazel replied, nodding hard. She said, “Nina, I want to go after what I truly love.”
“Got it. Head back and wait for me,” Nina said, turning on her heel and walking away.
Hazel stood there, stunned, watching Nina’s figure disappear.
She wasn’t really sure what Nina meant by that.
Hazel thought, ‘Didn’t Nina say she’d help me pay for art classes as long as I asked?
‘But just now, she didn’t actually agree or refuse.”
Hazel felt a little uneasy. She was worried that Nina’would change her mind.
This was her only shot.
Lately, Linda and Judy, after Nina put them in their place, had been constantly taking it out on Joanna, always finding excuses to belittle her.

Linda was especially harsh. She’d call Joanna a freeloader and ask if she planned to mooch off the Swanson family for the rest of her life.
Many nights, Hazel would catch Joanna quietly wiping away tears, but whenever she turned to face her, Joanna would force a smile.
So people wouldn’t look down on Hazel, Joanna had started looking for ways to help out lately.
But now, as a washed-up actress, nobody in the industry cared about her anymore.
Even the TV shows wouldn’t give her a shot.

Hazel’s heart twisted with worry for her mom, but there was nothing she could do to protect her. All she could count on was her own talent: if she wanted to get her mom out of this place, she’d have to do it herself.
Nina was her last shot. If Nina changed her mind, Hazel knew she’d be stuck here for a long time before she could finally take her mom and leave.
