Nina glanced at Ethan, pressed her lips together, and said nothing.

Vivian clenched her fists tightly. The tension froze the room.

She didn’t speak because she didn’t know what to say. She hated Nina, this daughter with a “defective” mind. She wanted Nina gone from this world entirely.

Vivian knew the lies she had spun after sending Nina away had plenty of holes. Some family members believed them, some didn’t, but she didn’t care. All that mattered was that Nina was gone.

Nina cast him a sidelong glance. Her voice carried no emotion. “Why did you stop me?”

Ethan let out a wry smile. “She’s still our mom. It’d be easy to hit her, but you can’t handle the consequences.”

He had known Nina’s fiery temper since they were kids. She was someone who could never tolerate even a little loss. If he hadn’t stopped her, she would have seriously hurt Vivian.

He wasn’t worried about Vivian getting hurt. He was worried about the social backlash if Nina hit Vivian. No one knew what Vivian had done to them, but if they attacked her, the story of children beating their mother would spread across the internet instantly.

Nina had just come back. He didn’t want her carrying that stigma.

Nina frowned but stayed silent. She never cared about her reputation. And originally, she had no intention of returning to this house.

It was Scarlet, for some unknown reason, who insisted on helping her find her family.

Scarlet was the one who let the Swanson family realize that Lily wasn’t James’s daughter. Scarlet also delivered Nina’s DNA test results to the Swanson residence. From there, it naturally led the Swansons to her.
