In the VIP ward of a hospital in Roveilia, Loren Carroll was hooked up to all sorts of machines, his face completely drained of color, looking deathly pale.
At the bedside, the doctor who had just finished resuscitating Loren shook his head and said to Cheney Carroll, “You should start making arrangements. Given his condition, he probably won’t make it through the
week.”
“How could this happen? Didn’t you say he’d have at least another six months? We’ve been using all those pricey meds just to keep him going, so how did it suddenly drop to just a week?” Cheney’s legs nearly gave
out.
If his father was gone, his mother probably wouldn’t have the will to live either. Their family would completely fall apart.
“I’ve told you again and again, don’t let Loren get upset. Try to fulfill whatever he wants,” the doctor said helplessly. “He got too worked up this time, and his body just couldn’t take it anymore.
“Better start making arrangements now. His condition is getting worse every day. Honestly, I can’t even say if he’ll last a week.”
“Is there really nothing else we can do?” Cheney asked.
The doctor hesitated. “If Miracle Doctor were here, maybe there’d be hope, but… nobody knows how to reach Miracle Doctor.”
Cheney was stunned. “Miracle Doctor?”
He’d heard the title plenty of times, but to him, Miracle Doctor was nothing short of a legend.
Nobody he knew had ever actually seen Miracle Doctor in person.
Loren had been sick for ages, and Cheney had blown a fortune trying to find the best doctors from all over the world.
Plenty of them came. Each one more skilled than the last. Loren had been given a death sentence years ago, but those famous doctors managed to keep him hanging on for a few more years with rare medicinal herbs and precious remedies.
But no matter what they did, they could never truly heal him.
When Cheney heard about Miracle Doctor’s legendary skills, he pulled out all the stops, spending a fortune trying to track him down. But no matter how hard he tried, Miracle Doctor was nowhere to be found.
Eventually, Cheney figured Miracle Doctor was just some made-up legend, so he stopped looking.
He never expected Miracle Doctor to actually exist.
“That’s right,” the doctor said, “Miracle Doctor has a legendary move called the Soul-Stealing Thirteen Needles. They say it can literally raise the dead.

“And he’s not just a genius in traditional medicine, he’s also a top-notch surgeon. People call him the number one scalpel in the country.”
The doctor glanced at Loren lying on the bed. “With Miracle Doctor’s skills, he could keep Loren alive, maybe even pull off surgery that no one else would dare try.
“But with how things are, I doubt he’ll last long enough for you to track Miracle Doctor down.”
“Thanks,” Cheney replied, determination burning in his eyes. “I’ll search every corner of the earth if I have to.”
With that, Cheney left the ward.
Outside the ward, everyone from the Carroll family was waiting anxiously.
Loren’s wife Melody leaned on her cane, her youngest son helping her to her feet. “How is he? Is your father going to make it?” she asked.
Cheney glanced at Melody and hesitated for a moment. He just couldn’t bring himself to tell her the truth. “He pulled through for now, Mom. You should go home and get some rest.
“The doctor said you can’t push yourself too hard. We’ll be here with Dad.”
“I’m not leaving,” Melody said, her eyes red and puffy from crying. “I’m staying right here with him. I need to see for myself that he’s going to be okay.”
Cheney pressed his lips together and shot a look at his wife, Rachel.
Rachel caught on immediately and stepped forward. “Melody, I know you want to stay by Loren’s side, but you have to look after yourself too. If Loren wakes up and sees you sick, it’ll break his heart.
“Cheney already said he’s stable for now. With all of us here, we won’t let anything happen to him.”
Cheney’s brothers joined in, “Yeah, Mom. You haven’t had a decent night’s sleep in three days. If you keep this up, you’ll wear yourself out. Get some rest tonight, and you can come see Dad tomorrow. He’ll be fine.”
After some gentle persuasion from her sons, Melody finally agreed to go home and get some rest.
After Melody left, Cheney looked at everyone present with a grave expression.
Loren had three sons and one daughter.
All of his kids were here, except for his youngest daughter, who was missing.
Each of them had their own families and children.
Including Loren’s sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, there were more than a dozen people altogether.
Cheney looked around at everyone, his voice cold. “Come with me.”
