Cheney didn’t want to disturb Loren’s rest, but since everyone had to stay at the hospital, they could only talk things over in the lounge outside the ward.

Once everyone was seated, Cheney said coldly, “I’ll only say this once. If anyone pissed Dad off and caused this, stand up now. Don’t make me hunt you down myself. You have one minute.”

His two brothers traded baffled looks with their wives. “Cheney, seriously, what are you even saying? We’re not out of our minds. We all know how bad Dad’s health is. None of us would ever risk making him upset.

“I’ve been running all over the country, chasing down famous doctors and rare medicines. I barely even spoke to Dad lately. I swear, I didn’t do anything to piss him off. Come on, haven’t we always done whatever he wanted, ever since we were kids?”

Cheney’s brow furrowed. “So it wasn’t any of you?”

“Of course not! Who’d be stupid enough to try something like that?” Kylan Carroll shot back.

Romeo Carroll spoke up, “Cheney, what’s really going on? You sent Mom away on purpose. Does that mean Dad’s condition is worse than we thought?”

Cheney’s face was grim. “The doctor said we need to start preparing for the worst.”

“What?” Kylan and Cheney both shot to their feet, shock written all over their faces. “How did it get this bad? The doctor said he still had six months, and we’ve been using all those expensive meds to keep him going.

“Wasn’t he supposed to be getting better? How did it suddenly come to this?”

“Dad got so upset it took a toll on his heart,” Cheney said, his brow furrowed. “That’s why I’m asking who upset Dad so badly that he ended up like this.”

“It definitely wasn’t any of us,” Kylan said. “We all know how bad Dad’s health is. None of us would risk making him mad. I remember the day he collapsed, he was alone in his study.

“When he came out, he looked like he was in a hurry to go somewhere, but before he could even get in the car, he just passed out.”

It had been almost two weeks since Loren collapsed, and during that time, he had been rushed for emergency care three times.

But he still hadn’t woken up.

He was only hanging in there because of all the meds and machines.

Cheney knitted his brows. “He wanted to go somewhere?”

Suddenly, he thought of Riverdale.

Cheney pulled himself together. “I’ll get to the bottom of this, but right now, the most important thing is to get in touch with Miracle Doctor. The doctor said Miracle Doctor was the only one who can save Dad.”

He rubbed his temples, frustration clear in his voice. “But no one even knows where Miracle Doctor is, and I don’t have any way to contact him. I don’t even know where to begin.

“For the next few days, drop everything and do whatever it takes to help me find him.”

Romeo frowned. “Without even a single lead, this is like searching for a needle in a haystack!”

“Even if it’s impossible, we still have to try,” Cheney said, his voice firm. “Dad only has a week at most. We have to find Miracle Doctor before then. If we can’t, we’ll have to start making arrangements for Dad’s funeral.”

The three brothers looked utterly defeated, worry etched all over their faces.

Just then, Cheney’s son Warren muttered under his breath, “Miracle Doctor? I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of him before.”

Suddenly, everyone in the Carroll family snapped their heads toward Warren.

Warren flinched. “What’s with the looks?”

“You know Miracle Doctor?” Cheney asked.

“I’m not totally sure,” Warren said, scratching his head. “I think Judson mentioned him when we were on the phone.

“I remember his grandpa was chewing him out, saying, ‘Miracle Doctor is same age as you and already so accomplished.’ But I have no idea if it’s the same Miracle Doctor you guys are talking about.”

“Quick, call Judson right now!” Cheney ordered.
