Felix thought he’d finally gotten through to Ryan and was just starting to relax, when Ryan suddenly asked Max to come

over.

Max was downstairs, making sure Sarah’s food was safe.

Nina had made it clear that anything Sarah ate or used had to be checked, no exceptions.

So besides Max, a few top docs Nina had brought in were also double-checking everything.

Max had just finished up in the kitchen when someone came running to tell him Ryan wanted to see him. He didn’t dare drag his feet and rushed straight upstairs to Nina’s room.

Ryan was totally shameless. With Nina out of the house, he just made himself at home in her room.

Sarah tried to stop him, but it was pointless. He just tossed off his jacket and sprawled out on Nina’s bed.

Sarah could only sigh in resignation. There was nothing she could do about him.

When Max walked into the room, Ryan had just lit up a cigarette.

“Sir, you wanted to see me?” Max said respectfully.

Ryan lounged on the bed, legs crossed, cigarette dangling from his fingers. He asked casually, “How much do I pay you a month?”

Max’s brow twitched. He thought, ‘Why am I suddenly so nervous?

‘Is he asking about my salary because I messed up protecting the Swanson family? Is he about to fire me?’

Max was freaking out inside, but he managed to stammer, “Well… 60 thousand.”

That was just his base salary. He also got a 300-thousand-dollar bonus at the end of the year.

Nowhere else would pay him this kind of money.

He really didn’t want to lose this job.

Ryan said, “I’m putting 300 thousand on the table for you. Can you keep an eye on Mrs. Swanson and make sure nothing happens to her until Nina comes back?”

Ryan took a slow drag from his cigarette, letting the smoke curl lazily into the air.

“Y-Yes, I can do it!” Max was so freaked out that he almost burst into tears.

He thought, I’d do this even if he didn’t pay me!

‘No matter what, I have to keep Mrs. Swanson safe!’

“Good,” Ryan said, stubbing out his cigarette and getting to his feet. “But if anything happens to Mrs. Swanson before Nina gets back, pack your bags. You’re off to Frontierland to dig coal.””

“Understood, sir. I’ll make sure Mrs. Swanson is safe,” Max replied. Then he hesitated and asked carefully, “What about the Lowell family?”

Vivian was Nina’s mom. If he went too hard on them, he was afraid that it’d be hard for him to give Nina an explanation.

Ryan shot him a sideways look. “If they can still crawl out of the hospital, then you’ll be the one getting admitted:

Max’s body gave a nervous shiver. He said, “Got it.”

After wrapping things up, Ryan gave Sarah a quick heads-up, and then took off for Frontierland with Felix.

Not long after Ryan left, Sarah called James into her room.

She said, “James, I want the truth. What’s really going on between you and Vivian? Why is the Lowell farmily accusing you of raping her? And what happened with you and Beatrice back then?

“You two were about to get engaged, then out of the blue you announced you were marrying Vivian. What happened in between? I need answers.”

She sat behind her desk, staring James down with a stern, unyielding gaze.

“Mom, I really don’t know what you’re talking about,” James said, knitting his brows, obviously shutting down the conversation.

“Even now, you’re still keeping secrets from me?” Sarah snapped, her voice sharp with anger.

She slammed her hand down on the desk. “Don’t think I haven’t noticed you and Vivian have been living in separate rooms since the wedding. If you really care about her, why keep your distance?

“And those kids. You don’t give a damn about any of them. James, I want the real story.”

“I…” James looked torn, opening his mouth to say something, but in the end, he just couldn’t bring himself to speak. “Mom, please, just stop asking.”

“You!” Sarah could only glare at James, torn between anger and resignation.

She remembered James wasn’t always like this. He used to be full of energy and guts, but also had a grown-up’s calm and reliability.
