“No, she’s fine,” Max said after a moment’s hesitation. “It’s Mr. Swanson.”

When she heard that Sarah was fine, Elaine’s furrowed brows relaxed. She asked, sounding indifferent, “Nina’s father?”

“Yeah,” Max said. “That whole thing about Mr. Swanson assaulting Nina’s mom still hasn’t been dealt with. The Lowell family is using it to blackmail him now, and Mr. and Mrs. Swanson are trying to figure out a solution.”

“Oh,” Elaine replied with a frosty indifference. “Why should I care? How is that my problem?”

Max’s mouth twitched in frustration. “He’s Ms. Swanson’s father. Shouldn’t you at least do something to help?”

Ryan had only told him to keep Sarah safe.
