For some reason, Hazel felt a chill run down her spine.

Waverly hadn’t said anything weird, but Hazel couldn’t shake off the uneasy feeling.

Hazel hugged her sketchpad tighter and reached for the car door “Aunt Waverly, actually, I just remembered I promised to meet up with a friend today, so I’ll have to skip drawing.”

As soon as she finished speaking, Hazel tried to open the door, but it was locked.

Waverly grabbed her hand, still smiling. “Trying to get out already? Chill. You’ll get out soon.”

Hazel stared at her, terrified. “A-Aunt Waverly, what are you doing?”

Waverly said, “Don’t be scared. I’m your aunt. Why would I ever hurt you? Just sit tight. You’ll find out soon enough when we get there.”

With that, Waverly turned to the driver and said, “Let’s go.”

The car fired up and rolled out of the Swanson residence.

In another car in the garage, Luna sat there frowning, deep in thought as she watched the other car drive off.

“Luna, what’s up? Is there something wrong with the car? We’ve been sitting here for ages,” Linda asked.

Luna pressed her lips together. “Mom, that was Aunt Waverly and Hazel in that car.”

“Oh, really?” Linda looked surprised, then let out a mocking laugh. “Waverly always has her nose in the air and never bothers with any of the kids. Didn’t expect Hazel to be the special one.”

“No, that’s not it!” Luna said seriously. “Hazel and Aunt Waverly never really got along. Lately, Aunt Waverly has been trying to talk to Hazel, but Hazel just ignored her. So why are they suddenly heading out together today? Something’s definitely off

here.”

Linda waved it off. “What’s so strange about it? Waverly’s Hazel’s aunt, after all. Just because they weren’t close before doesn’t mean they can’t be now. Maybe the other kids just ignore Waverly, so now she’s trying to buddy up to Hazel.

Then Linda hurried her, “Alright, forget about them. Let’s head out already. We’ve got to meet Professor Calderon. Getting a meeting with him is a big deal.

“Stick with him for a year, and you’ll get into Betrico University. This is your only shot. Don’t let anyone mess it up for you

Luna hesitated for a moment, swung the car door open, and hopped out. “Mom, let Professor Calderon know I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to go today. I’m going to check on Grandma first.”

Linda was so stunned that she just sat there. When she finally supped out of it, her eyes were wide with disbeliet “Are you crazy? You know how hard it is to get this chance. You’re just go to walk away from it?”

“I can’t shake this feeling that something bad’s about to happen. Hazel’s my cousin. I can’t just ignore it,” Luna said, running straight to Sarah’s room.

Linda didn’t even have time to stop her.
