After Falconer took the bodyguards and staff away, only Nina, Luna, and Linda were left in the villa.

Nina looked up at Linda. “Aunt Linda, you really don’t need to worry about Luna’s safety. The people I’ve assigned to you are all battle-hardened and personally trained by me. No one can get close to them. So just relax.”

Linda didn’t respond. At this point, she could say nothing else. Her whole staff had been swapped out. Now only the three of them were in on it.

She hadn’t even dared to tell James, worried he’d be just as impulsive as Luna and might let it slip.

But she hadn’t expected Nina to find out anyway.

The way Nina handled things left her with nothing to criticize.

The first thing Nina did was make sure Luna was safe and swap out everyone who’d been there today. She even brought elite security to protect them.

Nina had considered every angle, so Linda really had nothing left to complain about.

Linda took a deep breath. “Fine, since you already know, I have no choice. Just make sure Lily is out of the picture as soon as possible. Every day she stays in this house, Luna’s at greater risk.”

Linda paused and then said, “Nina, don’t blame me. Maybe I am selfish and small-minded, but isn’t it normal for a mother to love her child? I was just so scared something might happen to Luna that I came up with this stupid plan.”

“I understand,” Nina replied.

Nina never really had a good impression of Linda. When she was a kid, Linda was always scrambling for more, never taking even the slightest loss.

She was even more protective when it came to her own kids. She’d never let them get the short end of the stick. Linda would make a fuss over even the smallest things.

Back then, Nina was just a child, and all she knew was that most people didn’t care for Linda.

When Nina moved back into the Swanson residence, Linda got even more competitive. She always tried to snatch up whatever she could, especially when it came to James’ family.

But it was all just petty stuff, so Nina just let it slide. Looking back now, she found Linda might not have been exactly a joy to be around, but she never truly meant any harm.

She was pretty lousy when it came to dealing with people. But when it came to her kids, she’d lay down her life if she had to.

But some people thought having kids was enough. They never bothered with actually raising them. To them, children were nothing more than prizes to claim. Take Vivian, for example.

Nina glanced up, watching Linda hug Luna tightly, and let out a silent sigh herself. Her eyes turned slightly

red.

That kind of family love was really enviable. Sadly, she never got to experience that herself.

Nina lifted her head, pushing her feelings down, and said to Luna, “Come with me to see Camden tomorrow. He’s pretty mad.”

“I’m sorry, Nina,” Luna mumbled, her head down. “I’ll apologize to Camden.”

“I’ll

go with you,” Linda said softly, taking Luna’s hand. “I didn’t think things through. I thought leaving here would keep us safe, so I said those things to Camden. I’ll beg him to forgive me, so he’ll keep teaching you.”

“I’m leaving now,” Nina said. She could feel her emotions about spilling over if she stayed any longer.

She took a deep breath and turned to leave.

Linda watched Nina’s back, a little confused. “What’s wrong with Nina?”

Luna pressed her lips together and sighed. “Mom, maybe don’t treat me so well when Nina’s around.”

“Why?” Linda asked, genuinely puzzled. “Why should I hold back just because someone else is around when I’m just being good to my own daughter?”

“You forgot that her own parents never liked her,” Luna said quietly.

James had changed now, but back when Nina was little, he acted like she was just some random kid.

Luna thought, ‘Being nice to her now doesn’t really change anything, does it? Late affection isn’t worth a damn.’
