Anna fell silent for a moment and then spoke up hesitantly. “I did some digging before.

“Before Mrs. Vivian Swanson married Mr. James Swanson, she was in a relationship with another guy. For some reason, she didn’t end up with him and ended up with Mr. James Swanson instead.”

Anna paused and then asked, “Do you think Lily might actually be that guy’s daughter?”

Sarah was taken aback. “Are you saying…?”

Anna continued, “From what I heard, Vivian was head over heels for that man, and the Lowell family really liked him, too. Supposedly, he was pretty powerful in Betrico.

“I don’t know why he didn’t choose Mrs. Vivian Swanson, and I couldn’t find out the details. But honestly, it seems like she still has feelings for him. Maybe that’s why she’s so protective of Lily. Because Lily is his daughter.”

They had been digging into Vivian’s past for ages. They couldn’t get any leads on Lily’s origins, so the focus shifted to Vivian.

Sarah just couldn’t wrap her head around why Vivian would treat Lily, someone who wasn’t even her own flesh and blood, better than her real daughter.

And after the whole scandal about Vivian forcing James into marrying her came to light, Sarah had Anna dig even deeper into Vivian’s history.

Recently, all Anna managed to find out was that there really was some guy from Vivian’s past. But Anna still couldn’t find anything concrete about his identity.

She’d originally planned to wait until she had all the facts before telling Sarah, but now it was obvious that the whole thing with Vivian was really eating at Sarah.

“If they didn’t get to the bottom of it, Sarah probably wouldn’t get a good night’s sleep.

“That man’s kid?” Sarah echoed, her brows furrowing in confusion. “That just doesn’t add up. If he rejected Vivian, wouldn’t she resent him? Why would she go out of her way to raise his child?”

Anna nodded, feeling the same way. “Honestly, it’s just a hunch. We’ve been digging for ages and still haven’t found anything solid, so I started thinking maybe it’s all connected to that man somehow.”

“That’s actually a solid lead,” Sarah mused after a pause. “Come to think of it, Nina was acting kind of off toward Lily today. Is she digging into Lily, too? Or maybe she’s already figured out who Lily really is?”

Nina wasn’t the type to show off. Since she came back, she never bragged about all the certificates she’d gotten. But today, she laid out every single one of them right in front of Lily.

Sarah couldn’t shake the feeling that Nina had another reason besides just showing off.

Sarah said, her brow furrowed, “Alright, keep following this lead and see if you can dig up anything useful.

‘Could they seriously be after these old paintings’ Sarah wondered. ‘Doesn’t really make sense, does it?’

“Do you think Mr. Samuel Swanson might’ve left something behind that he never told you about?” Anna asked. “I mean, Vivian kept Lily in the Swanson family for all these years.

“She’s gotta be after something, right? Maybe the reason they haven’t done anything yet is that they still haven’t found whatever it is they’re looking for.”

Sarah hesitated for a moment. “You were there when Samuel passed away. I remember everything he told me, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Do you recall anything?”

Anna thought for a moment and then shook her head. “Honestly, I can’t remember.”

She’d been there with Sarah at the time, but she knew some things were meant to be kept private, so she just tuned it out and pretended not to hear.

Besides, it had been years, and she’d long since forgotten.
