Ethan stiffened, unable to say a word for a long moment.

Elaine leaned in, her face barely an inch away from his. She could clearly see the fleeting look of affection in his eyes before it vanished.

She let out a soft laugh and said, “You really have no self-control Ethan. In ten days, we hooked up seven times. The first time we were drunk, but after that, completely sober. Even when started it, you never resisted.”

Ethan’s face turned red.

He never thought Elaine would see right through him, catching the feelings he’d tried so hard to hide. Ethan finally admitted to himself; he liked Elaine.

That was his very first part-time gig after turning eighteen.

But the manager tried to stiff him on his pay.

That was his very first paycheck, earned with his own hard work there was no way he was letting them take it away.

He went to the company to confront them about it, but the manager called security and had him roughed up.

That was when he ran into Elaine.

That’s when he realized she was actually Lanelle.

Every time she made an appearance, her style was totally unique, and every word she said in interviews left a mark on him.

But after that, Ethan only ever saw Elaine online; he never saw her in person again.

Thanks to Nina, he finally got to see Elaine face-to-face once more.

He was always super cautious around Elaine, worried he’d do something to turn her off.

He even stooped so low as to use his birthday as an excuse to ask Elaine for a few outfits she’d designed herself.

To keep her from suspecting anything, he made sure she whipped up a set for Kevin and the others, too.

Those outfits were still hanging in his closet, untouched; he couldn’t bear to wear them, not even once, because they

meant too much to him.

But he never thought Elaine would notice his feelings for her.

“I really don’t like you,” Elaine said, pulling Ethan back to reality.

Ethan’s eyes darkened. He knew Elaine didn’t have feelings for m, and that’s exactly why he couldn’t bring himself to marry her; he knew she’d be miserable.

“Honestly, I don’t like any man,” Elaine said, her voice almost airy “Because of my dad, I pretty much hate all men. I never even thought about getting married.”

“But,” Elaine said, and turned to look at Ethan. “Ethan, I don’t hate you. If I ever had to marry someone, I’d want it to be you.”

Ethan pressed his lips together. He answered, “That’s not fair to you.”

“Fairness doesn’t really matter,” Elaine replied,! you, then whoever ended up with me would’ve
