Vivian sneered inwardly. She used to see Lily in a better light because of Mason.

But now that illusion was gone, the more Vivian looked at Lily, the faker she seemed.

Lily caught the sarcasm in her voice and replied softly, “You’re my aunt, and of course, I’d think about you. After all these years living together, I’ve always seen you like my real family. I really do hope things go well for you.”

Vivian gave Lily a once–over, then lowered her gaze and smiled. I know you mean well, but there’s no need to try to fix things with Nina. That girl’s got ice in her veins. She’ll never forgive me.”

Vivian never expected Nina to forgive her anyway. After all, she made her own choices.

“Still, we should at least keep up appearances,” Lily said. “Aunt Vivian, you know Nina’s still holding a grudge against me because of what you did to her back then.

“Ever since she came back to the Swanson family, she’s been getting back at us. Even Martin and Matthew are keeping their heads down around her. You really shouldn’t keep butting heads with her.”

After a pause, Lily added, “Grandma’s been pushing for that prescription. If things get too tense with Nina, we’re not getting it anytime soon.”

Vivian gave Lily a long, searching look before smiling. “You’re right. So, what’s your take? How do we go about getting that prescription?”

“The pharmaceutical company is still being set up, so this is our best shot. We should try to plant a few people on the inside,” Lily said.

“If we can snag the prescription before anyone else, even if the Swansons get the company running, they’ll end up tangled in a lawsuit,” she added.

Vivian smiled, “You really do think things through. I’ll leave this to you.”

Lily blinked in surprise. “Me?”

Vivian said, “Of course, it’s you, Lily. You’re still just a kid. Even if you get caught, I’ll beg them to go easy on you. No one would really blame you.

“You can see for yourself. The Swansons barely even look at me anymore. If I screw up one more time, your uncle will throw me out on the street without a second thought.”

Vivian’s smile was all sunshine and warmth. But Lily felt a chill despite all that warmth.

Lily gave a dry laugh. “Well, I’ll give it a shot.”

Vivian gently stroked Lily’s hair, her smile warm. “You’re always so sensible. It wasn’t for nothing that I gave up my child and put all my energy into you. You won’t let me down, will you, Lily”

Lily stared at Vivian’s smile, a sudden wave of panic rising in her chest. For some reason, Vivian kind of scared her sometimes.

She couldn’t even imagine what would happen if Vivian ever found out she was the child of Lawrence and the Lowell adopted daughter.

Elaine was a bit flustered by how enthusiastic Sarah was; she honestly felt a little embarrassed. She’d wanted to drag Nina along for backup, but Nina was busy and couldn’t join her.
