Miranda had been sent to live with David when she was just a kid, so all her memories of her mom were from when she was

little.

All Miranda remembered was that her mom was really pretty and always loved wearing red dresses.

Her mom was so gentle. She’d play games with her and sing her songs. But her mom never once taught her how to write her mother’s name.

Up until now, the only name she’d ever heard Nina use for her mom was Scarlet. Beyond that, Miranda knew absolutely nothing.

“Ruby James,” Nina said seriously. “Remember, that’s your mother’s name. The name your grandfather’s family gave her? Forget about it. This is the only one you need to know.

“She picked it herself, taking her adoptive father’s last name. ‘Ruby‘ was her way of wishing for a future as bright as ruby. She chose that name to inspire herself, to always keep moving forward.”

Nina paused, looking Miranda straight in the eye. “Miranda, I need you to understand this. Anyone in this world might doubt your mother, but you must trust her, no matter what.

“She’s been through so much. She knows what it’s like to be out in the storm, so she’s always the first to offer an umbrella to someone else getting drenched. She’d never hurt a soul.”

Nina wasn’t even sure why she felt the need to say all that to Miranda, but there was this vague, uneasy feeling she just couldn’t shake.

That feeling had been lingering ever since she ran into the Shadowblade Syndicate people.

Maybe it was all those years living with Scarlet. They just had this bond, like they could sense each other’s moods without a word.

Now, Nina couldn’t help but worry that something bad had happened to Scarlet.

The more Nina thought about it, the more an unexplainable irritation crept over her.

“I will,” Miranda said softly, sensing just how much Nina truly cared about her mom. She nodded, wanting to do as she was told. She didn’t want to be a burden to anyone.

Nina’s eyes softened as she looked at Miranda and Philip. “Patrick’s the senior disciple from the Shadowblade Syndicate. His sword skills are legendary, and his martial arts are solid, too.

“I’m totally confident letting him train you. Philip, you’ve got a medical background, so I don’t need to explain anatomy to you. While you’re both in Riverdale, after Miranda gets out of school, you’ll be in charge of teaching her about pressure points.”

Nina’s expression turned serious. “I’ll leave you some acupuncture books. You can start studying on your own for now.”

Philip looked worried. “Nina, aren’t you going to teach us yourself?”

Nina stared out the window, her mood hard to read. “Looks like I be leaving Riverdale soon.”

That sense of unease was only getting worse.

Nina needed to track down Ryan and get some answers about Scarlet in person.

But before heading to Betrico, she had to take care of some unfinished business in Riverdale.

At the Swanson residence, Lily was absentmindedly watering the flowers in the garden, her eyes wandering toward the front gate every now and then.

Vivian had been quietly standing behind Lily for a while before suddenly asking. “What are you thinking about?”

“Ah!” Lily yelped, startled by Vivian’s sudden voice, and the watering can slipped from her hand, clattering to the ground.

When Lily realized it was her mom, she let out a breath. “Mom, why do you always sneak up on me like that? You nearly gave me a heart attack!”

“Didn’t you hear me coming? I wasn’t exactly quiet,” Vivian said. What’s on your mind? You look totally spaced out.”

“No, it’s nothing,” Lily replied quickly, trying to cover up her anxiety.

Vivian gave her a long, searching look. “We’re heading to Betrico tomorrow. Did you get your stuff packed?”

“Yep, all packed,” Lily said.

Vivian nodded. “We’re heading to Betrico, and we’ll be gone for a month before we can come back. Don’t waste time with the formula.

“Once you get it, get it to your grandma right away. And don’t let Martin know. He’s always been against handing the formula over to your grandma.”

Lily’s gaze dropped. “Got it.”

There was no way she’d ever tell Martin, and she sure as hell wasn’t handing that formula over to the Lowell family.

That formula was her ticket into the Nicholson family. She’d have to be out of her mind to give it to anyone else.
