“But if that formula lands in the Lowell family’s hands, I get nothing. So even if it’s just for myself, I’m not letting anyone walk away with it.”
Vivian clearly didn’t want to keep talking to Nina. She turned around and left without another word.
Nina watched Vivian’s retreating figure, her smile growing even wider.
‘So Mrs. Swanson’s finally realized Lily’s actually Lawrence’s daughter, Nina mused. This is getting interesting.
The next day, after breakfast, Vivian and Lily set off for Betrico.
Lily looked like she’d had a blast hanging out with Elliott yesterday. She was grinning from ear to ear the whole way out the door.
It was raining in Riverdale today.
Nobody went out. Even Martin and Matthew, who were usually out and about, were home for once.
James had been holed up in his study upstairs for days, and no one had a clue what he was doing.
Today, he actually came downstairs for a change. But he looked pretty pale.
“Mom, did Dad leave anything else behind besides the formula? James asked.
Sarah, who was trimming flowers with Nina and Elaine, stopped what she was doing for a moment. “What exactly are you talking about?”
Martin and Matthew both looked up at Sarah at the same time.
“I don’t know the specifics,” James said, his face grim. “The company’s been running into some trouble lately. I found out someone’s coming after us, but I still can’t figure out who.
“Just now, I got a call. He said if I don’t hand over whatever Dad left behind, he will wipe the Swanson family off the map in Riverdale.”
Sure, Nina was technically the head of the Swanson family now, but she was always buried in her own stuff. So when it came to the company, James was still the one running the show.
Sarah shot Nina a look, then said, “Other than the formula, your dad didn’t really leave anything else important behind.”
“Think harder, Mom,” James urged, sounding anxious. “Are you sure Dad didn’t mention something to you back then and you just forgot?”
Sarah actually stopped to think, then her eyes lit up. “Wait, I do remember! Your dad once told me he was part of some kind of drug research.
“I never really got the details, but he said it was bad news, and under no circumstances should it fall into the wrong hands. Why would whoever called you be after something like that?”
“I don’t know either,” James said, sounding tense. “He just told us to hand over the stuff. Mom, what do we do now? Are we supposed to just give them that drug?”
“No way!” Sarah shot back, her voice sharp. “Your dad said that drug could mess with people’s bodies, mutate them or something. If we let it out, what if it gets used for something terrible?”
Martin’s brow furrowed at that. Only he and his father knew about the drug Samuel had left behind.

Wait, could that call have been from Dad?‘ Martin wondered, suspicion flickering in his mind. “That can’t be right.
‘Dad knows how important that drug is. He would never make a move like that unless he was sure the Swansons actually had it. But now, it turns out the Swansons really do have the formula
Martin pressed his lips together and asked, “Grandma, are you sure the drug is really here in our home?”
“Yeah, I’m sure. It’s in the storage room with your grandpa’s stuff Sarah said. “I know how important it is, so I’ve never touched it.”
Martin nodded. “Looks like someone’s got their eye on the Swanson family. Dad, Grandma’s right. We can’t hand over that drug. If we do, it’ll be endless trouble for us.”
James frowned. “Not handing it over might make things even messier for us.”
“Just give me a little time,” Martin said. “I’ll find out who’s behind this, and then we can figure out what to do.”
James was silent for a moment. “That’s all we can do for now.”
With that, James shot Nina a look.
Nina’s eyes narrowed, her fingers drumming slowly and deliberately on the table.
‘The fish took the bait. Time for some people to get wiped out, Nina thought coldly.
