The other officers stood there, shell-shocked. They wanted to jump in and help Wylder, but every time they tried to step forward, Nina just dug the needle in deeper. None of them dare to move.
Wylder, though, never lost his cool for a second. He just waved the officers off, totally unfazed. “Don’t worry. She won’t kill me. Just finish up here and head back.”
Nina bundled Wylder into the car. Then she ordered Simon to drive them to the orphanage.
When they arrived at the orphanage gates, Nina tucked away he needles and swung the car door open.
She stood outside, her gaze steady on Wylder. “Come in.”
Wylder didn’t hesitate. He simply followed Nina inside.
Wylder stood at the entrance to the orphanage, unable to hide his surprise.
This orphanage had been around for ages. It had been standing for at least sixty years. But the place looked nothing like some old, rundown building.
Wylder followed Nina inside, and as soon as the kids saw her, they rushed over to say hi, cheering and calling out her name.
Nina softened her demeanor, scooped up a child in her arms, and chatted with them warmly, her smile lighting up her face.
Wylder stood behind Nina, watching as the sunlight made her seem radiant, so different from the fierce woman he’d seen just moments ago.
Once Nina finished greeting the kids, she told them all to go play in the other rooms.
Once the room was empty, Nina stood up and pointed at a little girl, maybe ten years old, who’d just darted away. “She was dumped at the orphanage door the day she was born, swaddled in nothing but a blanket.
“She was born with congenital heart disease. When the director found her, she was barely breathing, her face ashen, clinging to life by a thread.
“She needs pricey meds every single day just to survive. The total cost? At least 1 million. And you know who paid for all of it? It’s Scarlet.”
Nina added, “Scarlet made sure she got into the best hospital, found the top doctors, and watched over her like a hawk. That’s how she snatched that kid back from death’s door.
“But that was just round one. She still needs meds and treatment for years if she ever wants a real shot at recovery. In the past decade, Scarlet’s dropped 2.5 million on her alone.”
Nina continued, “And that’s just one kid. There are plenty of others, some luckier, born healthy, but most of the ones abandoned here came with illnesses.
“All those treatments and all those bills add up fast. This orphange burns through millions every year, and what you’re seeing right now? It’s barely scratching the surface.”
Nina turned to Wylder, her tone calm. “Scarlet funds ten orphages. She’s a powerhouse. Just one nightclub she runs brings in enough to cover all the expenses for an entire orphanage.
“But Moira and her girls? They have to entertain clients night at night, just to scrape together a little cash. Sull, no matter how hard it is, every penny they make ends up helping these kid survive.”
As she finished, Nina’s expression turned icy. “You’ve got your pocedures, and you’re allowed to doubt anyone you want, by

“She’s the one who taught me everything I know. She always told me, ‘Nothing matters more than our country. So I’ll never believe Scarlet would turn her back on us. Show me all the evidence you want. I won’t believe a word of it.”
Wylder just kept quiet, lips pressed tight.
“I brought you here so you could see for yourself. How could someone willing to pour every last cent she owns into helping these kids in need ever betray her country?” Nina said, her voice low and unwavering.
“So I don’t care what hoops I have to jump through, I’m going to be part of this investigation. I don’t trust a single one of you. The only thing I’ll believe is what I uncover with my own hands,” she added.
