Chapter 409

Martin stared at Nina in shock. “Do you mean this was all your doing?”

He thought, ‘Right. How did I forget? Someone like Nina could throw us into a mental hospital without lifting a finger. She wants us dead.

‘No, worse than that. She wants us to suffer, to stay alive while feeling what she went through back then!

“Mr. Swanson, you finally figured it out,” Nina said with a smirk.

As soon as she finished, Simon pulled over a chair for her. Nina sat down slowly, crossing her legs, her fingers resting on her thigh as they tapped gently.

“Why are you doing this?” Martin nearly broke down as he shouted, his voice trembling with desperation. “Nina, I’m your brother. We share the same mother. Why would you do this to me?”

“Why?” Nina smirked, her lips curling with mockery. “Mr. Swanson, it seems that you’ve totally forgotten what you did when we were kids.”

Martin shuddered as if struck. All the memories he’d forgotten suddenly rushed back into his head.

He remembered that, even though he never abused Nina like Vivian did, whenever Vivian hurt Nina, he always remained silent. Vivian was the executioner, and he was the one who handed her the knife.

Even after Vivian finished her abuse, he would come to look at Nina with icy indifference and sneer. “Why do I have a silly sister like you?”

Whenever his friends came over and asked who Nina was, he would reply with a cold shrug, “Just the maid’s daughter.”

And whenever Nina tried to talk to him, he would shove her aside and tell her to fuck off.

Martin looked completely drained and collapsed onto the floor. For a second, he even put himself in Nina’s shoes.

He thought that if he were the one who had been abused, he might have been even more ruthless than Nina.

Waverly also remembered what she’d done to Nina back then..

After years of living the high life, she’d long since forgotten about the abuse she’d put Nina through.

She’d dumped all her resentment on Nina, forcing her to cry and beg for mercy.

The scene was the same, but the roles had reversed. Now, she was the one begging.

As Waverly remembered the inhuman torment she’d suffered lately, she started to panic. “Nina, please, don’t be so cruel to me. I’m your aunt. Your grandma won’t want to see me get hurt.”

Matthew joined in, shouting, “Yeah, we’re family, Nina. You can’t do this to Martin and me.”

They writhed on the bed, tied up and helpless.

Nina spared them only one cold look before rising, “Enjoy what I’ve arranged for you. Don’t let my effort go to waste.”

Then Nina turned and walked away,

Looking at what happened to them, she should have felt relieved, but she didn’t feel any better.

What they did to her back then was still burned into her memory. She got her revenge, but the pain was still there.

She felt no satisfaction at all.

As Nina’s footsteps faded into the distance, images of being tortured by the patients rushed into their heads.

They yelled, “Nina, you’ll rot in hell.”

Lawrence was in his study, puffing on a cigar. Standing before him was a man dressed in black clothes.

After hearing his report, Lawrence smacked the desk hard, his eyes blazing. “What did you say? Are you telling me they vanished into thin air?”

The man kept his head down and muttered, “By the time our guys showed up, they’d already made their escape. The Enforcement Squad is on their tail, but so far, nothing.”

Lawrence squinted, murderous intent surging. “Find them. I don’t care what it takes.”

“Got it,” the man replied, hesitating for a moment before asking, “And once we find them, do we bring them back, or-” Lawrence snorted. “Hell no. Those filthy things don’t belong in the Nicholson family. Find them and kill them.”

He thought, ‘Martin knows too much about the Nicholson family. If he talks and messes up the plan, we’ll all be doomed!

Lawrence hesitated for a moment, then said, “Destroy all of Martin’s assets as soon as possible. Leave no evidence behind. And go check with the Enforcement Squad. See if they’ve spilled anything.”

Lawrence paused, then added, “Martin and his crew are broke and wanted everywhere. No way they can hop on any transport and get out. Betrico is the only option left for them.”

Lawrence paced the room, muttering, “Where could Martin possibly hole up in Betrico? Vivian is Martin and Matthew’s mother; she probably wouldn’t leave them behind.

“Maybe not. Martin isn’t completely stupid. If they’re on the run, the Enforcement Squad will target Vivian. There must be somewhere in Betrico they could hide without involving Vivian.”

Lawrence squinted. “Right, northern suburb mental hospital.”

Lawrence slammed his hand on the desk. “Go check it out. If they’re in there, just leave them. That kind of place ruins people. Dead or not, they’re done. Saves me the effort.”

“Got it,” the man replied.

He was just about to head out when Lawrence stopped him. “Wait, get the Nicholson family’s men together and kill Nina. That damn girl keeps screwing up my plans. I want her dead.”

Last time, he sent the Shadowblade Syndicate to kill Nina, thinking nothing could possibly go wrong.

However, not only did the Shadowblade Syndicate fail to take her out, but they actually switched sides and started following her instead.

When Lawrence found out, he was so furious that he nearly passed out on the

spot.

And once again, thanks to Nina, both Martin and Matthew got dragged down into this mess. Even though Lawrence never

thought much of his two sons, Matthew’s medical skills had been a real asset to him.

He was counting on Matthew to develop that special drug for him, but Nina had ruined everything.

He wouldn’t rest an inch until she was dead.

At three in the afternoon, Nina arrived at the Betrico Zenith Research Institute.

A man with glasses stepped up and offered his hand. “You’re the one Mr. Quentin told us about, aren’t you?”

“Hello,” Nina replied, shaking his hand.

“I’m Titus Lewis, director of the Betrico Zenith Research Institute. Mr. Quentin said that you’ll be the new director here,” Titus said, and eyed Nina up and down.

He just couldn’t figure out why Wylder would let a girl this young take charge of the institute.

He thought, ‘This is a research institute, not a school. Nina looks like she’s barely twenty, probably still in school. Does she even have a clue what real research is about?

‘And we’re working on drugs here. If something goes wrong, the institute takes the blame. Making Nina the boss? This has to be a joke. Besides, everyone here has a big ego. She probably won’t be able to command anyone!

However, since Wylder put her in charge, Titus had no choice but to go along with it, even if he wasn’t happy about it.

Titus dropped the skeptical look and switched to a businesslike tone. “Let me take you to meet your colleagues at the institute.”

Nina nodded. “Thanks.”

Nina followed Titus, and soon, they stepped into the research lab.

Everyone inside was suited up in matching protective gear, and her entrance didn’t disrupt their work at all.

Everyone was busy, but everything moved with smooth efficiency.

Titus clapped and said, “Alright, everyone, stop working for a moment. Let me introduce our new head, Nina.”
