It was worth noting that Scarlet had once served as a guest instrutor at that same military academy.

Scarlet’s file was consistent with what Nina already knew.

Nina closed the files without a hint of emotion. Aside from the Goodwin family’s, neither Scarlet’s nor Ryan’s files had anything she needed.

What she really wanted was every bit of info on Scarlet’s role in his job and a full rundown of Ryan’s activities in

Frontierland.

Nina thought, ‘Sneaky Wylder. This is not what I want.”

Nina checked the time; it was already noon.

Nina hadn’t slept a wink since yesterday, and that call from Ryan had pushed her frustration to the breaking point. She forced herself to take a deep breath, trying to get her emotions under control.

Then she whipped out her phone and called Ryan.

She called over a dozen times, but no one picked up.

Next, she tried Felix, but he didn’t pick up either.

Thinking back to the chaos before the call ended, Nina immediately called Black Wolf, and he answered right away.

Nina pressed her lips. “Ryan might be in trouble. Send your mento track him down.”

After a brief pause, she added, “Take the doctor I left at the base with you.”

Black Wolf nodded and hung up.

Nina gripped her phone, gazing out the window. Her normally calm heart was racing uncontrollably.

She had thought that being apart from Ryan for this long would lessen his importance in her heart, but only now did she realize that, at some point, he had become incredibly significant to her.

Nina had to admit that she was genuinely worried about him.

Simon noticed Nina’s expression in the rearview mirror.

Nina was normally quiet and collected, her mind sharp as ever, yet for the first time, Simon saw a gravity in her face he hadn’t witnessed before.

Simon thought for a moment, then said, “Boss, maybe you should just go to Frontierland yourself.”

Nina hadn’t said it out loud, but Simon could see she was worried about Ryan.

Nina pressed her lips. “Not now.”

She was dying to fly to Frontierland and find Ryan herself, but she had more important stuff to take care of

Nina looked out the window. “He’ll be fine. He has to be.”

Simon tried to speak, but ended up staying silent.

He thought, ‘Nina might not even realize it, but she’s actually scared. She’s afraid something has happened to Ryan. If the medicine project hadn’t already begun, she’d probably fly to Frontierland immediately.’

Simon let out a quiet sigh. He never really liked Ryan, but right now, he honestly hoped he would be okay because he didn’t want Nina to feel sad.

Simon kept his eyes on the road, while Nina leaned back in the back seat, thinking over Ryan’s words.

Ryan mentioned Jason during that call, but he never got to finish what he was saying before he lost consciousness.

Nina drummed her fingers slowly on the car window.

She didn’t know Jason all that well, but from what she knew, Jason was a decent guy, just a bit too lovestruck for his own good.

She thought, Jason and Ryan are on the same team; they’re super close. Was Ryan bringing up Jason because he wanted me to look out for him?’

Nina shook her head, shaking off that idea.

She thought, ‘No, that’s not it. Jason might not be as sharp as Ryan, but he certainly has the ability to protect himself. Besides, Ryan commands so many subordinates. If Jason needed guarding, he’d send them, not me.

‘If it’s not about keeping Jason safe, then—’

A sharp, icy glint cut across Nina’s eyes.

Suddenly, it hit her that Ryan was warning her to be wary of Jason.
