Sophia noticed Grace’s face darken and quickly lowered her hea, staying silent.

“Let me tell you,” Grace said sharply. “No matter how great Clair is, if Ryan doesn’t like her, she’ll never become part of the Fosters. And so what if Nina was raised by a nightclub hostess? What makes her any worse than Claire?”

“I’ve lived a long life and seen all kinds of people. Claire’s tricks? she dares use you as a shield in front of me? Does she think I’m a pushover? Ryan doesn’t like her, neither do I, and your grandparents definitely don’t!” she said.

“I’m warning you, Sophia. You’d better stay away from Claire. If you keep taking her side, no matter right or wrong, and keep stirring up trouble with Nina, don’t blame me if I get tough on you!” she added.

Sophia stomped her foot in frustration. “Mom, what’s gotten into you lately? Didn’t you always like Claire when she was a kid?”

“That was when she was little. Now, just seeing her gets on my nerves,” Grace snapped. “A woman who plays two men at once? What kind of decent person does that?”

“Claire didn’t do that,” Sophia argued back.

Grace didn’t bother arguing with her. “Cut the crap. Go apologize to Nina right now and invite her to our house. If she doesn’t come, then don’t bother coming home.”

With that, Grace turned and walked away.

Charles glanced at Sophia, shook his head, and followed after Grace.

Grace went back to her room with a frosty look, plopped down in a chair, and didn’t say a single word.

Charles walked over and started massaging her shoulders, trying to calm her down. “Come on, don’t be mad. Sophia’s s young. She doesn’t know any better.”

Grace erupted, “Eighteen isn’t young! Nina’s done so much with her life, while Sophia just follows Claire around, letting people use her—and even helps count the money! How did I end up with such a clueless daughter?”

Charles opened his mouth, but quickly shut it. He didn’t dare say a word.

His wife was in full-on rage mode, and he wasn’t about to get caught in the crossfire.

The more Grace thought about it, the angrier she got. “My child was good, and now, after hanging around Claire, she’s picked up all that arrogance and disregard for others. If I don’t put my foot down, do they think I’m weak enough?”

With that, Grace slammed her hand on the table. “Let’s go! We’re heading to the Goodwin family. I’m going to give them a piece of my mind today.”

Meanwhile, Nina had just gotten home when her phone started ringing.

It was an unknown number.

But the caller ID showed it was from Frontierland.

When Nina saw “Frontierland” on the screen, her heart clenched and her breath grew heavier.

Her fingers were shaking as she tried to answer the call.

Her nerves were on edge, and all she could hear was a mess of static and muffled voices in the background.

After a long moment, she finally managed to catch a few words.

“Nina… I’m okay. Just stay safe… Don’t trust anyone… I…”

Ryan never got to finish. The static swallowed his voice, and the line went dead.

Nina clutched her phone so tightly her knuckles went white.

Just then, Black Wolf sent her a message. [Nina, Ryder will be getting on the Mary Cruise at 9 tonight for the auction. I’ll have someone deliver your ticket.]

Clearly, Black Wolf had tried to call her first, but seeing she was on another call, he sent the message instead.

Nina didn’t know what was wrong, but her heart felt heavy and uncomfortable.

She shot off a message to Black Wolf.

[Find out which district this number’s from and go check it out. See if it’s Ryan,] she replied.

As she typed, her fingers suddenly paused, and a sharp glint flashed in her eyes.

Something was off about that call.

The voice was Ryan’s, but the tone was all wrong.

Ryan knew she had a base in Frontierland, and he’d been out of contact for days; if he was really in trouble, it wouldn’t be easy for him to reach out. The fact that he did meant things must be pretty bad on his end.

If he’d just gotten a signal, there’s no way he’d be dumb enough to call her first.
