Ethan whipped his head around to stare at Elaine; his face changed.

He was surprised by their behavior.

“Hello, you two!” Veda greeted her with a warm and genuine smile.

Then Veda turned to Ethan and asked, “How long are you planning to stay in Hillcrest?”

“We’re heading back the day after tomorrow,” Ethan replied. “Kevin and I have a tech company, and we came for a partnership deal, signed it yesterday. I’ll show them around Hillcrest for a few days before we leave.”

Ethan paused for a moment, then took out a gift. “Oh, almost forgot. This is for you.”

Veda looked a little confused. “What’s this?”

“A wedding gift!” Ethan smiled, “You said you’d marry after graduation. You never sent us an invite, so we missed your big day. We prepared this for you. When they heard I was coming to Hillcrest, they made sure I brought it along for you.”

Veda stared at the gift, a sting of sadness pricking at the corners of her eyes.

After a moment, she forced a small smile. “Thank you… But I never got married”

“No way?” Ethan blurted out, looking genuinely surprised. “Didn’t your family have everything planned out? How come the wedding didn’t go through?”

“Something happened, so the wedding fell through,” Veda said, glancing at Ethan. “What about you? Did you end up getting married?”

Ethan almost blurted out that he was married, but then he remembered why they were here and quickly shook his head. “Not yet.”

He let out a wry laugh. “You know how it is. I was never the favorite at home. My mom’s always cared more about my brothers and my adopted sister. I’ve never really amounted to anything, so no one’s ever wanted to marry me.”

“Didn’t you start your own company?” Veda asked.

“Oh, that was only just recently. Honestly, I earned the money by working at a nightclub…” Ethan admitted, sounding a bit sheepish.

Veda’s eyes widened in shock, her voice rising. “Wait, you actually worked as a male stripper?”

Nina just stared, totally at a loss for words.

Elaine was speechless.

“Don’t city folks love visiting the countryside? Our village has come a long way. You should swing by and see for yourselves.” Veda suggested with a smile.

Ethan paused, then looked over at Nina. “Nina, what do you think? Wanna check it out?”

“Sounds fun!” Nina beamed, her smile sweet as ever. “I’ve never been out to the countryside before!*

Ethan nodded, then asked Veda, “Are you sure we won’t be intruding if we come visit your home?”

“Not at all! My parents are super friendly and always love having guests,” Veda replied with a bright smile.
