Sarah’s face darkened instantly, her presence radiating authority. “So, Vivian, are you running the family now? Do I need your approval for every decision?”
Vivian stiffened, realizing Sarah was truly angry. She lowered her voice. “That’s not what I meant. I just-”
Before Vivian could finish, Sarah snapped, “I’ve been patient with you because you’re Nina’s mother, but that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. I’m still in charge. If you want to call the shots, you’ll have to wait until I’m gone.”
Vivian’s heart raced. Catching the cold look James shot her, she quickly explained, “I’m not trying to take over. It’s just the homecoming party-”
Sarah interrupted again, “The party is happening, period. Anyone who has a problem can leave the family. I want everyone to know Nina is loved and supported.”
Vivian fell silent, thinking, ‘What spell did Nina cast to make Sarah so protective?
‘This damned old hag has gone blind and heartless with age. Lily’s been good to her since childhood. Even if Lily isn’t her real granddaughter, there should be some affection, right? But she doesn’t care about anything Lily’s ever done for her.
Nina looked up at Sarah. The older woman showed her age now, grey threads weaving through her hair.
Though she might not have the strength to control the family like before, she was still doing everything possible to protect Nina, just as she always had.
Nina’s nose stung, and a glisten of moisture welled up beneath her lowered eyes.
Across from Nina, Lily clenched her fists so tight her sharp nails dug into her skin, but she didn’t feel the pain. Her eyes burned with pure hatred, directed at both Sarah and Nina.
Just because I’m not a real Swanson, Grandma is going to kick me out after Nina is back?
‘Am I just garbage to her? Something she can use and discard at will?’ Lily thought, her heart twisting with bitterness.
She took a deep breath and plastered on a sweet smile. “Grandma, let me handle the party, okay?”
Sarah gave her a cool glance. “No need. I’ll have someone reliable take care of it.”
Lily’s eyes darkened. ‘Is this damn old hag implying I’m not trustworthy?”
Vivian had just been put in her place by Sarah and didn’t dare say another word. But watching Lily being wronged, she couldn’t stand idly by.
Too afraid to challenge Sarah again, she said to Lily with a snide tone, “Just stay out of it. Plenty of people in the family can handle this. Besides, you’re not even blood-related.
“This party is a big deal. If anything goes wrong, they’ll just blame it all on you.”
Vivian snorted coldly, “And didn’t you hear your grandma? She thinks you’re not reliable.”
Sarah gave Vivian a cold stare, and Vivian instantly clammed up.
Lily offered a gentle smile. “Ever since Nina came home, there’s been a lot of misunderstandings between us. Grandma, believe it or not, I see Nina as family. What happened back then wasn’t my choice.
“If I could find my real parents, I’d go back to them. But since I can’t, I have to stay for now. Maybe that’s why Nina’s upset.”

Before Sarah could respond, Lily turned to Vivian. “Mom, please don’t blame Nina anymore. I know you care about me, but Nina’s been through so much. Grandma just feels sorry for her. We all just want Nina to be happy.
“I want to help with the party. I want Nina to know I never meant to fight with her over anything. Grandma, give me a chance. I promise I won’t screw it up.”
Sarah’s cloudy eyes studied Lily for a long moment before she said casually, “You want to do it? Fine, it’s yours. But if anything goes wrong, you’ll answer to me.”
“I’ll make sure everything goes perfectly,” Lily smiled. “I promise.”
