The guards quickly came back after checking with their boss, leting Nina and Iris have a private conversation.

With the boss’s go-ahead, the two guards just nodded and slipped out of the room.

After the guards left, Nina took a seat across from the bed and gestured for Iris to join her.

Nina took Iris’s pulse first, then asked, “You’re bouncing back fast So why are they still keeping you

here?”

Iris shook her head, replying, “Beats me. The doctors check on me every day and say I’m fine, but the higher-ups still won’t let me go. They keep sending people to ask the same question. I seriously have no idea what they’re trying to do.”

“Do you want to get out of here?” Nina asked.

“Yeah,” Iris blurted out, suddenly emotional. “I want to go save Scarlet.”

“Save her?” Nina’s gaze sharpened on Iris. “So you already know scarlet’s actually okay, don’t you?”

Iris paused for a moment before saying, “She… something must’e happened to her, but then, when I really think about it, it feels like maybe nothing happened at all. I can’t put my finger on why, but I just have this feeling someone’s controlling her.”

“Someone’s controlling her?” Nina echoed.

Iris nodded. “Maybe I’m imagining it, but Scarlet seems to suffer every night, not sick, but tormented from within. I’ve asked her about it, but she never said a word. She just keeps telling me take care of Nina.”

Nina paused for a moment. “Tell me everything that happened in Frontierland; don’t leave anything out. What exactly went down with you guys?”

“I guess it started when you left,” Iris replied. “Before you went back to the Swanson family, Scarlet got orders to inv case, but it had nothing to do with what we’re dealing with now.

“After you returned, Scarlet headed to Betrico, then called me and told me to let you know about the serum. After th lost contact.

“Before I even had a chance to look for you, our place got surrounded. I played dead to slip away and went into hiding for while before I managed to reconnect with Scarlet.

“By then, she was already in Frontierland, and Moira and the others had been snatched by Crimson Syndicate. I don’t really know the details; you know how Scarlet is, she always keeps things close to the vest.

“Scarlet told me to come to Frontierland and find her, but then she went off the grid again. I had no choice but to lie low here and wait for her to reach out.

“About a month ago, she finally got in touch and told Moira and me to get some explosives ready; she wanted to blow up a factory.

“But Scarlet never saw it coming. Our plan got leaked, and before we could even get started, we walked right into an ambush. Scarlet fought like hell to get us out, but then she just disappeared.

“We tried to go back for her, but there were way too many of them; we didn’t stand a chance. In the end, Moira and the others ended up…”

Iris started sobbing. “Everyone protected me and made sure I was the only one who got out, just so I could deliver the message to you.”

Nina stayed silent for a moment, then turned to Ryan, asking, “What do you think?”

Ryan pressed his lips together. He answered, “I think someone’s ontrolling her, too. I searched all over Frontierland, but every trace of her was wiped clean. Later, we found out about Vincent.

“They were working on some kind of serum, so I thought Scarle must’ve been taken by him. But that’s not it. Whoever took her, Scarlet knows them, and she knows them well.”

Nina didn’t say a word.

After a long stretch of silence, she finally got to her feet and told fris, “Just lie low at home for now. I’ll try to work something out with the people in charge.”

Iris said, anxiety written all over her face, “Isn’t there any way you can get me out right now? I’m really worried about Scarlet.”
