He shot Ruby a vicious glare. “If Yusra doesn’t come back, then everyone pays. That means you, too.”

“I’ve never been afraid of dying,” Ruby shot back. “But don’t you dare use your twisted crusade as an excuse. If you want payback for what happened to Yusra, go after the real culprits; don’t take it out on innocent people.”

“Don’t give me that high and mighty crap,” the man snapped. “Don’t forget, I’m the one who gave you your life.”

Ruby looked up, her gaze sharp and unwavering. She said, “If I’d had a choice back then, when those people tossed me aside, I would’ve rather died right there.

“You saved me, raised me; you were my adoptive father and my master, and I was grateful. But now, I’m starting to think that wasn’t the whole story.

Ruby gave a cold, mocking laugh. “Did you really save me out of pity? Or was it just because I was born under a cursed omen?”

She paused, then continued, “No, let’s be honest; you were behind all of it from the very beginning. You knew about my cursed birth, so you set up this whole game, saved me, raised me just to make sure I’d owe you everything.

“Same with Nina; you had me rescue her for the exact same reason, because she was born under a bad omen, too. You’ve been scheming for over twenty years, all for the sake of resurrecting one person.”

The man fixed Ruby with a cold, vicious stare, saying nothing.

Ruby smirked. “But for all your plotting, you never saw this coming; you raised me, but I put my country first. And Nina, the one you doted on, she’s even crazier than me.
