The real problem was, Ryan always played hardball and never hesitated to go for the kill. Honestly, even if that person did call Nina, it probably wouldn’t change a thing now.

Richard was sweating bullets, desperate for a way to plead with van to spare the Carter family, when Nina’s phone suddenly

rang

Nina pulled out her phone and stared at the unfamiliar number for a long moment, not saying a word.

This was her private number. Only people she was really tight with had this number. After a brief pause, Nina answered the call.

“It’s me, Ruby,” the voice on the other end said.

Nina’s eyes flashed with recognition at the familiar voice. “Where are you?”

‘That’s Scarlet,’ Nina thought to herself. Her real name was Ruby James. But after all those years at the club, hardly anyone remembered her actual name. Everyone just called her Scarlet.

She got the nickname because she was always seen in red dresses. Her closet was filled with every kind of red dress you could imagine, except for maybe a couple of black ones.

“I’m wherever I’m needed,” Ruby said, the sound of her taking a rag on her cigarette clear over the line. Nina heard her inhale, then let out a slow exhale.

She said, “The Carter family did me a solid once. How about I use the favor of raising you to pay them back. Let them off the hook, yeah? Is that a fair trade?”

Nina’s brows furrowed, her anger written all over her face. “Is this supposed to be a joke?” Nina shot back, her tone icy.

Ruby chuckled, a hint of teasing in her voice. “That attitude of yours hasn’t changed one bit. Alright, enough with the small talk. Just give it to me straight. Yes or no?”

“Are you insane?” Nina snapped. She seldom lost control. Even if she was pissed off, she’d just put someone in their place right then and there.

But now, she couldn’t hold back anymore. She shouted, “You’re really gonna trade away everything between us for that lousy Carter family?”

Even though she was raging, a hint of fear flashed in her eyes. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was slipping right through her fingers, about to disappear from her life for good.

Ryan turned to look at Nina, sensing the storm of emotions raging inside her. ‘Who could be calling her now?’ Ryan thought, His eyes narrowing.

“Yeah, I’ve got issues. Still taking those meds you mixed up for me, aren’t I?” Ruby said, her voice casual and matter-of-fact.

Nina couldn’t hide her feelings anymore. She took a deep breath her voice urgent. “Just tell me where you are. I’ll come pick you up.”

“No need to look for me. I’ll show up when you need me,” Ruby eplied, calm as ever. “Just treat helping the Carter family as doing me a favor. If you really can’t, then trade your debt to me or this.”

With that, Ruby was about to hang up. Nina realized what Ruby was about to do and yelled, “Don’t hang up. I met your daughter.”

After a few seconds of silence, the call ended without another wed. The line went dead, and Nina’s mood soured instantly.

She called back, but the phone was already switched off. Nina’s face couldn’t get any darker.

Nina lifted her gaze to Richard, still pleading in the courtyard, then strode over and yanked him up by the collar. “Spill it. How did you get in touch with her?”

Richard felt utterly hopeless when he saw Nina blow up at that person. Clearly, whatever that person said didn’t work on Nina at all.

Suddenly, Nina stormed over, making him jump out of his skin. By the time he came to, he was face-to-face with Nina’s eyes, burning with rage.

“I-I sent her a message on the dark web, Richard stammered, his voice trembling. “She told me if I ever needed anything. just reach out to her there, and she’d get back to me.”

Nina’s frown deepened. The dark web? I’d known Scarlet for years and never even knew the dark web was a thing. What the hell is Scarlet really up to? Nina wondered, her suspicion growing.
