“But I can tell he really does seem to feel differently about you these days. Maybe he’s finally trying to accept you.”

A mocking smile flickered on Nina’s lips. “I don’t need his acceptance.”

To Nina, James was just a stranger living under the same roof.

There was no affection between them at all.

But Nina glanced at Sarah. If making up with James was what he grandma wanted, she’d go along with it.

Back at the Swanson residence, Lily clutched her phone tightly, Hesitating for a long time before finally dialing a number.

The call was picked up almost immediately.

As soon as the line connected, Lily burst into tears. “Matthew.”

“Lily, are you crying?” Matthew’s voice was tight with concern. “Who’s been messing with you?”

Lily took a shaky breath, her voice thick with tears. “No, no one’s been picking on me. I just miss you, Matthew. When are you coming home?”

“Come on, just be straight with me; what’s really going on?” Matthew pressed, clearly not buying Lily’s story one bit.

Lily was all smiles, all the time; she never cried. She was breaking down like this. Someone must’ve seriously messed with

her.

“Mom and Martin?” Lily said, her voice thick with emotion. “They’ve gone through a lot because of me. Matthew, I just wanted to talk to you for a bit.

“It looks like I might have to leave the Swanson residence soon. know you’re busy, but I really hope I can see you before I go. We’ve been together for so many years, and honestly, I’m really going to miss you guys.”

Matthew shot up from his seat, practically roaring, “Who the hell said you could leave? This is your home, always. Who does Nina think she is, waltzing back in here and trying to kick you out?

“Just hang tight. I’m coming home right now, and I’ll make sure he regrets messing with you.”

Matthew didn’t even let Lily get another word in before he slammed the call shut.

Lily tossed her phone onto the table, casually wiped away her tears, and a dangerous glint flashed in her eyes.
