The next day. Nina had just gotten out of bed when her phone ring. It was Elaine. “Nina, come with me to the Gemstone Exchange,” she said.
Nina put the call on speaker and set her phone on the table. As se brushed her teeth, she asked, “Aren’t you usually not interested in these gemstones?”
“Yeah, I’m not really into them,” Elaine replied, “but my mom’s birthday is coming up.
“I heard there’s a new batch at the exchange, so I want to see if I an score something nice to make her some jewelry. You’ve got a sharper eye than I; can you help me pick one out?”
It suddenly hit Nina; her grandma’s birthday was coming up, too
Sarah was never into anything fancy. Back when Nina lived at home, birthdays were just low-key family dinners with the Swanson family.
But after Vivian took Nina away and left her, Sarah stopped even joining the family for birthday meals. For years, she just didn’t celebrate at all.
Nina only found out about this once when she was chatting with the butler.
She felt really bad about it.
This year, Sarah was turning seventy.
Normally, when someone hit seventy, the family would throw a grand birthday party.
But this time, no one even mentioned it.
Sarah didn’t seem to care at all.
She only prioritized the reunion party for Nina.
But her grandma’s birthday was actually before the reunion party, just two weeks away.
Nina lowered her gaze. “Alright, I’ll be there in half an hour.”
She hung up, quickly got ready, and headed out without even grabbing breakfast.
Vivian watched as Nina strutted out like nobody else mattered, leaving the whole family waiting for her at breakfast.
Vivian was just about to blow up, but Lily quickly tugged at her sleeve.
Vivian swallowed her words. She took a deep breath. ‘Just hold it together,’ she told herself.
Sarah was still angry, so Vivian told herself not to cause trouble for Nina just yet.
Otherwise, Lily could actually get thrown out of the Swanson redence.
Just as Nina hopped on her motorcycle and pulled on her helme, Hazel came running out. “Nina?”
Nina took off her helmet. “What’s up?”
Hazel handed her a painting. “I redid this for you. Take a look. D you like it?”
Nina unfolded the painting and gave it a quick glance, a slight sile appearing on her lips. “Not bad.”

Hazel hesitated for a moment before saying softly, “Nina, thank ou.”
Hazel had wanted to thank Nina that night, but the house was a mess, and she never found the right moment.
Nina handed the painting to Hazel. “Hang it up in my room for me.”
Hazel replied, her eyes shining with excitement. “Okay.”
Nina is willing to hang my painting in her room. Does that mea she still likes me, just like when we were kids?’ Hazel thought to herself.
Nina caught the joy in Hazel’s eyes.
Nina paused for a moment, then asked, “Hazel, do you want to atually learn how to paint?”
Art wasn’t Hazel’s major.
Growing up in her family, Hazel rarely got to decide things for herself.
She’d never had any real lessons; most of the time, she just figured things out on her own.
Hazel’s mother, Joanna, knew Hazel loved to paint and wanted to support her, but she had no power in the house.
After they started living with the Swanson family, Joanna had even less say.
Joanna didn’t have any money, and just staying with the Swanson family and eating their food was enough to make the other women in the family resent her.
Sarah had tried giving Joanna money before, but Joanna always turned it down, so people wouldn’t talk.
With no money, Joanna couldn’t get Hazel a painting teacher.
Hazel looked down. “I don’t want to learn.”
She knew she and her mom were basically living under someone else’s roof with the Swanson family. If she wanted to break free, the only way was to study business, get into a good company, and make real money.
Only with enough cash could she finally take her mom and leave the Swanson residence behind.
