Nina frowned, then gently lifted Hazel’s chin with her slender fingers. “Look at me. Do you want to learn or not?”
Hazel met Nina’s eyes, so sharp that it felt like she could see straight into her soul. She meant to say no, but before she knew it, she was nodding. “Yeah, I do.”
Then she caught herself and quickly blurted out, “No, wait. I men, I don’t. Nina, I can’t afford it.”
Nina’s grip on Hazel’s chin tightened, her tone icy and commanding. “Remember, if you want something, fight for it yourself. Only losers run away from what they want.”
Hazel was so startled by Nina’s sudden intensity that tears welled up and spilled over.
Why is Nina suddenly so terrifying?’ Hazel thought, her heart racing. ‘Did I mess up somehow? Did I piss her off?”
Nina just stared at her, at a loss for words.
Wow, is she for real?’ Nina thought, totally at a loss. ‘Do I really seem that scary to her? Did I just make her cry with one sentence?’
Nina let go of Hazel, sounding a bit exasperated. “Why are you crying? You know I can help you. If you have a shot, why not take it?”
Hazel froze, tears still streaking her face. After a long pause, she finally said, “I don’t want to be a burden to you, Nina.”
She already owed Nina a favor, and if she owed her any more, she’d never be able to pay it back.
She knew full well that if she wanted to take art lessons, Nina would totally pay for it.
But Hazel just couldn’t take it.
Nina couldn’t help but laugh, both annoyed and amused, as she pulled on her helmet. “I told you. If you want something, go after it yourself.
“There are things I can give you, but I’m not the kind of person who just hands things out for free.”
With that, Nina hopped on her motorcycle and disappeared down the road, leaving the Swanson residence in the dust.
Hazel stood frozen, watching Nina’s badass silhouette disappear down the road, unable to snap out of it for a long time.
‘Is it really possible to fight for what I want?’ Hazel wondered, the question echoing in her mind.
Elaine had gotten to the Gemstone Exchange early.
As soon as she saw Nina, she waved her over. “Hey, Nina,”
To make sure there wasn’t a repeat of that airport mess, Elaine switched up her whole look today. She even threw on a mask.
She even busted out those disguise skills she’d learned from Nin
Blending into the crowd, nobody had a clue she was actually the amous Lanelle.
But Nina spotted her right away.
Nina knew Elaine wanted to keep things low-key, so she didn’t say anything about it.

The two of them wandered around the Gemstone Exchange together.

“Nina, do you see any good ones?” Elaine asked. “I’ve been staring at these for a while, but I still can’t tell which ones are worth it.”
Nina snorted. “These crappy stones? I wouldn’t even take them you paid me.”
They’d already wandered through most of the exchange, but not a single one was worth a second look.
They were just a bunch of garbage.
“Not even one decent stone?” Elaine frowned. “I thought this new batch was supposed to be really good?”
Elaine gave Nina a suspicious look. “Or maybe you’re just too picky; nothing ever measures up for you, does it?”
Nina replied coolly, “The most valuable one here is worth 15 milion. Does that even count as good stuff?”
Elaine wondered, ‘What? Are you for real? 15 million isn’t good enough for you? Is your bank account so loaded that 15 million is just pocket change to you?’
Elaine gave Nina an exasperated, almost resentful look.
Nina shrugged. “Fine, I’ll take another look. Maybe there’s something even more valuable.”
Honestly, even 15 million wasn’t impressive to her.
She was going to make a set of jewelry for her grandma. A gemstone worth 15 million wouldn’t make anything truly special.
As they were walking, a mocking voice rang out behind them. “Well, well, if it isn’t Nina, the real deal heiress, the Swanson family just dragged home?
“I heard you grew up with some club hostess. What, did she teach you how to pick up good gemstones?”
